I am a 30 year old stay at home mom of two. I have a 3 yr old son anda 1 yr old daughter. On Thanksgiving night my beautiful son passed away from a deadly virus called Adenovirus.I had never heard of the virus until I got my son’s autopsy report.I am writing to inform other parents of this virus because the symptoms are very similar to a severe cold or pneumonia at worst. And unlike many viruses, this one is not detected by a regular blood test. Basically if your doctor is not specifically looking for it, more than likely it will not get diagnosed and in my son’s case it was diagnosed too late. Since my son’s death I have done some research on this deadly virus that can attack your heart as well as your brain. That is just what it did to my son. It attacked his little heart and eventually caused brain damage, which ultimately led our family to pulling the plug on him. He went completely brain dead. I don’t think I actually heard the doctor when he told me that. I just remember nodding my head for lack of a verbal response. This is the hardest situation I ever had to go through. My son had just turned 3 on the 17th of November, a week before he died. I was even more devastated because my son was in the special education preschool program at Fair Oaks Elementary in Highland Springs, VA and he was just starting to make great strides. He had a severe speech delay and cognitive and sensory issues. I felt like he was just beginning to shine and he was showing great potential. I am still struggling everyday but I know have to go on for my daughter. I just hope my story will help one parent and save at least one child then I can say to my son “Vershaun my angel you helped save someone’s life!” Parents if your children have any of these symptoms that lasts longer than usual please ask your kids’ pediatrician about this virus. Pediatricians I ask that you do not lose your compassion for your patients and give special needs children the extra time and attention that they REQUIRE!!!!! Also here are two great websites with additional information on Adenovirus. Thanks for giving me an opportunity to share my story.

I'm so sorry for your loss! Thank you for sharing. I've never heard of this virus. I pray that the Lord give you new strength and comfort each day to live, especially for your little girl. My sister lost her 14 yr. old daughter suddenly from cancer. She had to go on for her then 10 year old. Just last yr. she got pregnant (after trying unsuccessfully for 8 years). This was an amazing susrprise & miracle for her. She had the baby on Valentine's Day. For the first time, she has joy again.
