I would feel really sorry for her, if she hadn't walked into the whole mess with her eyes wide open!
Where to start? I guess I'll go back to the beginning, and try to make this long story as short as I can..... Allie & Moose have been dating for a year. They go to different high schools and are in different grades, but they have several friends and interests in common; neither of them drives yet. They spend hours on the phone / internet each day, even if they may only get to see each other for 15mins at a time. He enjoys playing hockey in a couple of different leagues, and she enjoys watching him when she gets a chance. Sometimes they even get to go out: the movies, a carnival, dinner with his family, our family holiday functions, the amusement park, the water park, etc. I think it's great that they don't spend 24/7 together ~ they each get to grow as individuals as well as being part of "a couple".
This year they skipped both of their high schools' Homecoming dances ~ I can't remember why, but it was probably all of us parents. They went to her Winter Formal and his Sadie Hawkins. The only dance left was her JUNIOR PROM (he's a sophomore)! It was on a harbor cruise yacht, with a casino night and everything! PLUS, it just so happened to fall on their 1-year anniversary ~ May 24, last Saturday! That's where things start to fall apart.....
One week before prom tickets go on sale (04/21): Moose's parents tell him that they're getting a divorce (he's not too broken up over it), and his mother books a family trip to Italy; they're leaving the Wednesday before prom and will be gone for 3 weeks. Allie's more upset about Moose missing school and failing his classes than she is about prom ~ "There's always next year!" He doesn't want her to miss her prom, so they both agree that she'll go with a friend of his... Dinner & a limo with 2 other couples is planned.
Fast forward (04/28): Announcements are made at school that there will only be 1,000 tickets available to accomodate the 1,700+ students in the combined junior / senior classes! Plus, a permission slip is required to add a person from a different school to your guest list ~ parents & school administrators must sign this form, which isn't handed out until the 1st day of ticket sales. While Allie waits for the completed paperwork, prom tickets sell out in 3 days flat! Word around school is that plenty of freshman, along with people from other area high schools, have gotten tickets to crash the prom! My daughter resigns herself to the fact that she won't be going to prom after all - "Next year is more important anyway, I'll be a senior next year!"
Fast forward (05/05): The school chartered a second yacht, and 300 additional tickets are avialable! Allie buys her tickets, and adds Brett to her guest list. Time to shop for a dress.
Fast forward (05/12): Something has gone awry with Moose's trip to Italy ~ it's postponed until after school gets out in June! Moose can now go to prom with Allie! Is it possible to change your guest after you've bought your ticket? Aboslutely, just fill out a new permission slip! One couple backs out of the limo, but Brett says he still wants to go ~ he'll bring a friend and ride around town while the prom is going on, plus they'll pay for the missing couple! There's less than 2 weeks until prom; Allie's friend will come over & do her hair, but we still need to find a dress!
Fast forward (05/19): Moose's mom won't sign the permission slip, and his dad doesn't want him to go because prom is only "a night for teenagers to get drunk and get laid" so he won't sign either! Moose signs his mother's name (in front of her face), and SHE drives over to drop the permission slip off at my house! Allie turns it in at shcool; Moose has now replaced Brett on her guest list. We found a great dress over the weekend, but it has a broken zipper (10% off!) and it needs to be altered beacuse Allie is very short. The limo is down to 4 people (Brett's been kicked out since he's not going to prom), so the cost has been increased proportionately. Pictures are scheduled at 3:00 at the school so there's not a huge line at the dock. 5 days until prom; we still need to get shoes & jewelry and schedule a nail appointment ~ UGH! This is where the stress set in!
Fast forward (05/23): Allie & I are out shopping for shoes & jewelry when Moose calls to tell her that he can't go to prom! His parents are using his grades as an excuse; his mom is making him play in the hockey tournament on Saturday, but other than that he can't leave the house! Well, Allie will just go by herself and hang out with her friends and their dates ~ "Don't worry about it; it's not your fault," she says to him. Shoes & jewelry downgraded to $30; Allie's portion of the limo is doubled, and she'll have to buy her own dinner!
Fast forward (05/24): It's here! Prom Day 2008! While Allie is at her nail appointment, I pick up her newly shortened dress with the zipper fixed, and some hair accessories. Home again, she showers and starts waiting for her friend "the hairdresser", who shows up an hour and a half late ~ scratch pictures at school, she'll have them taken at the boat!Nails: done, Hair: done, Makeup: done. Time to get dressed so that MOM can take some pictures! Oh no ~ zipper not fixed! The track comes undone from the bottom and the pull gets stuck half-way! We finally get it down and sew the spot that separated ~ scratch mom's pictures, we get a memory book with the picture order anyway! Time to get dressed so Allie can make it to the limo on time! Oh no ~ zipper still not fixed! The teeth separate below the zipper again, and now the pull is REALLY stuck ~ we can't get it to move at all! After 15 minutes, the only way to get the dress off of Allie is to break the zipper apart! "Oh well, we can have the zipper fixed later & I'll wear that dress to winter formal next year!" What to wear to prom tonight? What to wear? Oh, yeah! The dress she wore for 8th grade graduation (yes, she really is still the same size) ~ she hasn't worn that to a school dance yet! BYE ALLIE! HAVE FUN! LOVE YOU!
.....but she didn't have fun! There were less than 100 people on the 2nd boat: no pictures, no prom court, no date, not even the casino night! Her friends were great about it ~ they kept her included so she didn't feel like a 5th wheel ~ and she danced all night, but "it just didn't turn out the way prom is supposed to be." I tried to tell her that this would happen, back when Moose suggested that she go with his friend, but she didn't want to listen to me. They never do...
There are no pictures, and she has only crappy memories! My only hope is that she gets this all out of her system before she (someday) gets married! What a horrendous wedding day this would have been!
Comments:
Becki, you are an awesome storyteller! I was on the edge of my seat as I read all about Allie's prom. Thank you for that; however, I am SO sorry to hear that it didn't turn out as she had expected. But she can't say you didn't warn her. I'm glad her friends included her...they sound like a great bunch of friends. Hopefully next year will turn out better, if she still chooses to go.
(I never went to either of my proms. No regrets here.)
