I was 18 when I was pregnant with my first.  For me breastfeeding my son helped boost my confidence level as a mom.  My body was providing the sole nutrition for my son.  It was amazing to me.  It was exactly what I needed to do for both my son and me.  Congrats on making a great choice for your family!

Breastfeeding is always okay, no matter what age you are.  I think a lot of teenage mom's are unable to breastfeed because of their schedules.  No one should ever feel bad about either breastfeeding or bottle feeding.  Just do what works for you.  You are going to have a hard enough time without having to worry what everyone else thinks.

The number one thing to always remember as a mom is to do what is best for you and your baby.  With my first baby I breastfed him for 14 months and did not add formula to his diet ever.  I had enough milk to supply an army of babies.  For some reason with my daughter I did not produce as much milk.  I tried everything to help produce more milk and it just didn't work out for me.  So I fed her as much milk as I was able and also supplemented with formula.  I don't think it affected her badly in anyway.  After she turned a year I switched her to only formula for awhile before switching her to soy milk.  That is what worked out for her.  I did try her on regular whole milk but it bothered her tummy.  Everything with feeding babies is trial and error.  Also discuss these things with your pediatrician.  Talk to them before making any major changes to your babies diet.  Sometimes they can be a great resource and sometimes not.

So, just keep doing what you are doing and you'll be fine.  The right thing is always what's best for you and baby together.

Jun. 2, 2008 at 11:15 PM Why on earth would somebody tell you that you shouldn't because of your age?! I think it's a very responsible and mature decision, and definitely the right one. Way to go mama!!!

GREAT JOB MOMMA!  Don't let anyone try and tell you that you are doing anything wrong.  You are doing everything right!  You know what is best for you and your child and you are doing it!  Way to go!!!!
