Interesting journal theme...

Anyway, let's see. I only get to choose three?

  • Open bigotry. In high school, I'd jump all over people and even slammed one boy against a tree by his shirt for violently bullying other kids for being gay. More recently, I told a man in Albertson's that he was repulsive and sad because he asked for an "American" worker when the Hindu woman at the butcher counter asked if she could help him. I'm sorry, but people can't help their sexuality or race - it's ridiculous to insult them for it, and even things like religion should NOT be insulted. Growing up Pagan, I had quite a few run-ins with children AND adults insulting my religion, and my family as well. It's just NOT okay.

  • People making dangerous parenting choices. I guess my neighbors are a perfect example of some problems. They think car seats are just a convenient place for their children to sit - not a safety device. They're so loose in their seats that they could probably get out without unbuckling if they wanted to. Their children play outside in the driveway unattended. They mow the lawn with the children less than two feet away, barefoot. They don't seem to think helmets while bike-riding are important in the slightest. For all of these things, my neighbor had the balls to tell ME that I was a paranoid mom. Right, yeah... I'm paranoid because I don't want my kid dead or mangled. My bad.

  • Inconsiderate folks. Is it REALLY that hard to return a smile? To let someone in in traffic, or give a brief 'Thank You' wave to someone who lets you in? To pause for a second to let someone go by you, rather than shoving your way in front of them? To say, "Please," "Thank you," "Excuse me," or "Have a nice day,"? Is it hard to say a quick, "Oops, I'm sorry," if you bump into someone? Common courtesy is not as common as it should be. I can't count the number of times someone's not responded to a kind comment even though they heard it, or looked annoyed when someone said, "Excuse me," before walking in front of them. I understand that sometimes people are having a bad day, but if you respond to everything positive in a negative manner, you'll STAY in that bad mood. Nothing like having someone be pleasant to you, and forcing yourself to actually return a smile to help you feel better.
