On Friday I had my first birth as an independent midwife. It was quite the whirlwind experience, for sure!

The mom had JUST hired me in the beginning of the week, and we were going to meet for the first time on Saturday morning. She lives an hour and a half from me, so we were working out when she'd call me in labor, and all of those wonderful details.

I hadn't prepared anything yet - that was actually my goal for Friday. Prepare the paperwork, including labor notes, newborn exam sheet, informed consent, etc.  I was going to go pick up the seaweed sheets in case of any tearing, and get my bag totally prepared.  I got her call at 8:30, just after dropping off Kaitlyn at school.  She said she had been contracting since 7am, and that they were coming at 5 and 3 minutes apart. I told her I'd be on my way.

I rushed home, left the kids in the car while I threw on my birth clothes and got my bag and scattered things. I grabbed some clothes for the kids, and some diapers and called my husband's grandmother. I got on the road, gave the kids to GIL, and hopped on the freeway. We won't even talk about how fast I went. LOL

I spoke with her on the phone a few times, and heard that she would be having the baby soon. I went as fast as I could. I got a call as I was getting off on her exit, that she felt like pushing. I was trying so hard not to stress, and was praying the whole way there.  I walked in and met mom for the first time.  : )   Her mom and 2 sisters were there with her, as well as her husband and 2 kids. She was on hands and knees on the bed.

She gave a push, but didn't like the sensation ( she had epidurals with her other 2 ), and kind of sucked the baby back in. She was disappointed that the head wasn't out yet. I told her if she could push through the burning, she'd have a baby soon. Nobody knew the sex. ( These are my favorite births! )  She gave a few more pushes, and the head was out. Baby was raising eyebrows, grimacing, and had great color tone. When he was out to his belly, he already started crying a bit, and then the rest came out. Older brother ( 4 ) announced that it was a boy, and everyone cheered.  : )   I held onto baby as mom rolled over to be able to snuggle with him.

She had very minimal bleeding, and the placenta came out almost without effort within 5 minutes of the baby.

I didn't do anything with the cord until an hour had gone by...keeping the placenta close in a chux pad. They were all curious about this, having only seen hospital births before where they clamp and cut immediately.

Mom and baby took a bath before getting him dressed, and I checked out mom. No tears whatsoever, not even a skid mark!  : )   Baby weighed 8 1/2 lbs on the dot, and was 21 1/2 inches long. Full head of hair, and a cutie pie.

Mom was feeling good enough to get up and eat lunch with everyone at the table, and then just HAD to get on the computer and load the pictures from the birth. LOL

It didn't hit me until yesterday, that I did a birth on my own. I did it!  It was scary, it was exhilerating, it was a lot of emotions at once.   : )

I don't have any more clients until September, and that's my very good friend. After that, none until December...and that's a VBA2C mom. Close to my heart!

Anyway, that's about it! Here's a HORRIBLE pic of me ( I drove up with wet hair, had no makeup on, hair looks awful. LOL  )
