When I think of someone with a disease my mind automatically goes to think of someone with cancer, AIDS, altheizmers, ect. What do you think of? Do you first think of addictions? Would you even consider that a disease? Okay, so I smoke and I currently do not have any diseases. If I continue to smoke, then yeah, I could get cancer which is clearly a disease, right? But, what if I stop smoking right now? Could you say I have cured myself from a disease?? What about addictions to cocaine, heroin or alcohol? Does that already make me have a disease? I mean, eventually if you escape the common stuff like AIDS from sharing needles, ect., you'll still get stuck with heart or kidney failure, but still, that's not a disease. I don't get it. My husband has a drug addition and only uses when he's emotional. If nothing is going wrong, he's not withdrawing or pawning anything to get it, but as soon as he gets upset he waits for a moment to go find it. I just don't think he's diseased like the rehab ppl told me. I think he just needs to stop doing it, and I don't think that by stopping he will have cured himself from a disease. Maybe, prevented one, but not cured himself from a current one. What do you think?

A disease is something you have not by choice.. you had the choice to pick up with smoke or put the money in the slot at the casino its a problem, not a disease.

A Disease is something like cancer, aids, or something that you had no choice in the matter of getting.

I think as a nation we have gotten too soft and are too worried about stepping on toes.. bugs me

Jun. 1, 2008 at 1:37 PM Drug addiction is a disease .....the person that stops doing drugs will always crave those drugs , want those drugs, that is why it is still an addiction even if he is not doing the drugs anymore.

Jun. 1, 2008 at 1:41 PM A disease is any illness, sickness, or aliment.  Yes, addiction of any form is a disease.  No one is ever truly cured from it, at any moment they may relapse.

Jun. 1, 2008 at 1:42 PM alcoholism is a disease which is an addiction. Many people have a high risk of having addictions because they have addictive personalities. Yes it was thier choice to start doing it, but they can't help themselves won't they start. They can stop, but as the above poster said, they will always crave them. My aunt is a recovered alcholic. She is still an alcoholic even though she hasn't had a drink in 10 years. She still has the disease because she will always want to do that. It's a disease in a different manner than obviously a virus or heart disease.  But sometimes the same word means different things.  jmo though

I have to agree a lil with msugarkane, it is a disease but when a person stops doing it no it is not cured but they dont necessarily want or crave them for the rest of thier life... I am a ex-drug and alcohol user -- I have no cravings or desire to have them anylonger -- did I have a disease yes I did, I didnt cure myself of it, but I dont crave it or have to have it.. my husband is a ex-drug addict, he has only been clean for three years and yes he has a disease -- someday he will no longer crave it but he does know that he cant have it and he doesnt go and look for it either.. be supportive, but there are some that just cant get away from it -- you have to ask yourself if you want to live with it or get a fresh start where you are not worring about what he may pawn off next to get a fix..

here if you need to chat with anyone..

Jun. 1, 2008 at 1:47 PM I don t think its a disease either, but an addiction. Drugs an alcohol are things u do to ur self. If u develope a condition from it i guess it could be a disease. Overcomming drugs and alcohol are very hard, but once u have done it u feel so much better. It is possible to be happy in ur own skin with out drugs. It took me 6 months. Once u get it out of ur system completely u want need it for comfort anymore. U can actually deal with more shit clean then when deppendant on drugs. Good luck!

I agree.  I was raised by drug addicts and alcoholics, and I have alcoholics on both sides of my family.  My doc told me I am genetically predisposed to alcoholism and other addictive substances and behaviors.

But I rarely drink.  Because it is my CHOICE.  Yes, I said CHOICE.  I CHOOSE not to drink.  I CHOOSE not to smoke.  I CHOOSE not to do drugs.  Having no will power is NOT a disease, it is just being WEAK.  I am not saying those who are addicted to things are bad people, I am just saying they do not have a disease.

this is a topic that has always bothered me.  I have more to say on it.  but it is probably too much as a response to someone else's post.  I think I'll make a post, too.  Just to get out all I have to say.  Thanks, OP, for letting me get this off my chest.
