So, to get rid of spiders there are many ideas.  None better than ruin their food source and they wont want to stay.  So I put spider spray on the wallk in the basement to kill the ones that were sitting out.  If I had any hedge balls I would totally toss them everywhere down there.  For now priority will be killing ones I see.  (comercial spray or bleach in a spray bottle does the trick.)

For the ants~! Then I took vinegar and put that in a spray bottle and sprayed all my doors and windows and floorboards with that.  I will wipe down all my counters and floors with the vinegar.  The vinegar ruins their scent trails and confuses them.  Then to get rid of their food.  Cleaning the floors and counters does that for the most part!  Now to get up the extra odds and ends that I never get to... Under the sink where we store the toaster!

I also set a few ant bait traps in the kitchen, one in the dining room, and one in the living room.  When they do come back in they will be attracted to these and then carry it back home and kill the nest.

Also tonight I am going out after the dog has had last potty and the kids are in for the night.  I am spraying some bug killer on the lawn.  The dog keeps getting fleas and we don't know where.  It has been suggested that they are in the grass.  Who knew that they could live in the grass?  So anyway.  This spray kills the fleas that may be in the grass.  And the ants that are invading our home.  Also the spiders!  BONUS.

I really hate to use chemical means if I can avoid it... But I need to nip this right now before the actual season gets here!

Plus our new cleaning schedule should work out well towards getting rid of all the buggers and making our home less friendly for them.

Good tips. We ended up using a big container of SALT in my front flowerbed just under the windows because we had ants galore coming in through the front window. No ants for almost a week now. I realize because salt breaks down, we are going to have to 'resalt' a few times.... but I'd say its more than worth it. I HATE ants!

Jun. 4, 2008 at 2:30 PM I am in the same boat but since we are remodeling there are more than plenty of openings for them to come in the house. my hubby sprayed chemicals in the back yard a week ago because my baby girl came in with a tick stuck to her diaper. Thanks God it was just her diaper and not her skin. anyway good luck with keeping the buggers out I will have to try the vinegar thing.  artificial sweeteners with aspartame in them take them out too. so pick up some from restaurants when you actually get to go out and eat.

Jun. 10, 2008 at 4:48 PM I had to put down a thing for the lawn as well...our entire lawn is infested with ant hills and we have an acre of land.  This one that goes down kills grubs, ants, fleas and ticks, which is a big bonus!
