the kids and hubby and I were hanging out out front tonight, riding big wheels, scooters, hubby was vaccuming his truck...and this lady comes up to us whom we've never seen before and she's all kind of panicky, but not in a crack head sort of way, I mean, she looked like a respectable older lady, something about she let her teenage son drive her car and he brought it back w/o gas so she wanted to borrow like $5 or something b/c she needed to get gas...I was alittle confused, but DH ended up giving her his gas can from the basement to take to the gas station, and all the while she kept promising to pay us back, that she lived down the street, blah blah blah, she's gonna kill her son (kidding) kill her husband (kidding too) b/c her DH had the MAC card w/ him and he was at work, so she had no access to cash, so my DH gives her the gas can and then she says something about needing to borrow money to put gas in the can...I didn't have anything lower than a $100 bill in my purse b/c I have DH check from Friday to put in the bank tomorrow and DH didn't have any cash b/c we just went to his bank today (Commerce) and he deposited all his money, coins and I counted out this lady $4 in quarters and gave her a $1 coin, so she could get $5 in gas...I know it's not much but...and she was all thankful and stuff and kept saying she'd pay us back asap and she left and walked down the street.....well she hasn't been back.....I'm not upset about the $5 or the gas can I'm upset that she didn't keep her word....would you have helped her?  a stranger like that?  would you have counted coins for her?  would you been ticked that she hasn't been back????  I feel bad for being a little ticked b/c it is only $5 and a gas can...but....I mean...we were nice enough to help you...and you aren't going to pay us back???  WTF....shrug....oh well, DH said something like maybe it was karma....this was a test for us so maybe things will start going right for us now that we helped her out....

Jun. 1, 2008 at 11:09 PM When did it happen tonight?  Maybe she just hasn't had a chance to get back to you.  Even if she doesn't, just consider your good deed for the day.

Thanksgiving Day we were at the gas station and a guy asked my husband for a couple dollars to get him to his brothers' house because he had ran out of gas. He was an older guy, late 40's and since it was a holiday he gave him a $5 (All he had in cash). We didn't stick around to see if he got gas or if he bought beer or something, but dh felt good about it.

I'm not sure that I would've done it unless it was someone I knew or a lady with kids or something. Actually if it was a lady with kids I would've probably went inside and told them to give her a few $$ in gas prepaid and then told her and left. It's not that I don't trust people but it's that I dont' trust them to do the honest thing sometimes. Times are tough for everybody and we know it as well as anybody in our household but we also have family that we know would help us in a heartbeat if we need it but we get by on our own and we're proud of that.

I guess if someone were asking me then they must need it for whatever reason.

Jun. 2, 2008 at 1:38 AM Yeah, just tonight...but I'm starting to wonder if we were swindled.  I didn't actually see the "car" that was out of gas and she was by kiddies or anything....I hope the PP is right in saying maybe she didn't get back to us as quickly as she had hoped, shrug....if we were swindled, this experience would probably make me think twice about helping someone who ran out of gas in the's a shame but she probably ruined it for people who may cross our paths...grin...darn her!
