My name is not the exact name my parents intended for me. It was supposed to be Judiah (which is the name of a desert near the Dead Sea) but the hospital misspelled it on my birth certificate. My parents decided to keep Jodia as it was unique (and they probably didn't want to have to deal with the red tape of changing it, lol).

For many year I believed that my name had no real meaning, until one day my husband decided to search the internet. He found several things of interest...

1. Orange Upperwing Jodia croceago - A rare species of moth, which despite concerted efforts has not been seen in Britain for a number of years. It was formerly found in very scattered localities in wooded habitats in the southern half of England and Wales. The flight period of the adults is during October and November, then hibernating and reappearing from March to May. (Hmmm...commonality, my birthday is in November.)

2. In Creole Jodia means Today.

3. There is a Jodia Bazar in Karachi , Packistan.

4. In Spain, jodía (usually the imperfect tense of joder) is used to refer to a Jewish woman (now judía). {Well, I am Jewish.} I have also been told by Cuban friends that, not the spelling, but the pronunciation of Jodia (jo-de-ah) is slang for "your fucked".

5. In Hebrew it means praised/admired.

6. (This is my favorite one.)Jodia is a type of flower in Palestine that is believed to be an aphrodisiac. (Being Jewish with ancestry back to Israel I am sure someone is turning in their grave on that one.)

So, although my name is not exactly what my parents picked out, it certainly has a wide range of meanings. I am happy with it.
