Observations of life.

There is a post floating around on CM talking about people's opinions of curse words.  May I ask why people give so much power to a group of letters put together and used in so many glorious ways as nouns, verbs and adjectives.  Curse words have many possibilities and I don't understand why people think they make the user look unintelligent.  They are words.

Sek si

D’iu lay

Baat po

Trou de cul

If I were to use these words in conversation, the listener or reader would think I am very intelligent for being able to use a foreign language or two.  These words would not carry a meaning to the listener or reader, they are words.

These words are Afrikaans, Cantonese, Italian and French.  Those groups of letters have no power over me, they are words.  Why are American curse words any different?  You give power to words if you choose, and in conversation the above words would be acceptable since you don't know the meaning.  I wonder if it's acceptable to say shit in Italy, but not merda.

They are just words!!!

In the immortal words of my Grams:

az isten bassza meg a büdös rücskös kurva anyádat

translation in secret squirrel crypto-code: 'May God fuck you stinking wrinkled whore mother'

Jun. 2, 2008 at 1:23 PM putain, con, merde, foutre... some of my favorite French cuss words, not to be left out. I agree. Telling someone they seem unintelligent for swearing actually shows how unintelligent you are, imo, because it shows you haven't been in a classroom in upper Academia. Professors are not shy with these words. They're just words.

Jun. 2, 2008 at 2:14 PM I guess they are deviant because society deems them to be deviant.  However, with their meanings widely understood, I just prefer not to hear them and I definately prefer that my son not have to hear them.

As I said on Auto's journal:

What I think is funny is that what is considered to be "bad" changes.  150 years ago, "breast" was a "dirty word".  Who really cares?  It's a bunch of sounds put together that someone arbitrarily decided was "bad".  It's ridiculous and ignorant to think that the use of "bad" words is what makes someone look stupid.
