The principal called this morning to tell us that Owen and Brenna were accepted to the school (and that they still had room for 1st graders if we knew anyone...which we don't).

Brenna was not happy to hear the news.  Owen was also not happy about switching schools.

I have a lot of apprehension about the whole thing but I keep telling myself that it will be a good experience for them.  It is just hard.  On one hand I want them to be able to be at a school and just stay there.  I switched schools a lot as a kid and hated it (I transferred after 1st, after 2nd, in the middle of 3rd (back to the school I went to 2nd grade), after 4th (back to the school I went for K-1) and after 6th.  It was rough.

I feel bad that I'm pulling Owen out of a school where he has friends and feels at home.  But, on the other hand, it is a public school so it is free.  The tuition for next year was going to be a struggle for us and my dad.  With just Meagan at that school the tuition is managable.

My other big worry is getting them to and from school.  I walked over there after I dropped the kids off for school last week and it took me about 15-20 minutes to get to the school.  The kids walk slower then me, though.  The day doesn't start until 8:30am so there is plenty of time to walk there if we wanted.

I'm more worried about winter.  I walked the kids every day last year, even when the windchill was -20 because it was quicker, easier and, many times, safer then driving.  They don't plow the side streets around here when it snows and it gets really icy on the roads.  I don't like driving in those conditions.

Maybe, if I'm lucky, when dh goes back to work he'll get afternoons and he'll be able to drive them.

Anyway.  They got into the new school and start August 18, a week before Meagan.  I'm sad they will be leaving their old school, but excited to start on a new adventure.  I just hope they really like it in the end.  I can always transfer them back to Meagan's school and somehow we will get by with the tuition...like always.

Jun. 2, 2008 at 6:17 PM you'll have to let me know how it goes. I hope to be gone before Abby hits K if the school is still around then.

At least the two of them are going to be there together!  Is there a bus that would be an option - city bus or school bus?  If it were a city bus, you could ride with them instead of walking them.  Wow, your house is going to be pretty quiet next fall with only Nora around!
