I am so torn on what to do! I love my job but have a feeling that once the baby comes I won't be able to leave him/her to go to work. I feel like I owe my boss the courtesy of letting her know if I'm not coming back after maternity leave but I'm so confused still!

Jun. 2, 2008 at 4:17 PM When I got pregnant I thought the same thing...can you afford not to work if you decide to stay home with your baby?If you dont want to go back, then see if you can telecommute from home(work at home)does your employer offer that?As soon as I became pregnant I knew that I wanted to be home.We could afford to cut back for awhile.I began working at home and its been that way since she was born and now she is 4.However there are plenty of moms that work outside the home and have kids, its all about balancing.I wouldnt decide yet,as you have 6-8 weeks after the baby is born and perhaps you could try working after you have the baby and see how it goes.Would you put your baby in daycare or would you have a family member/spouse care for your baby while at work?I would be interested to know what you decide and good luck!

Jun. 2, 2008 at 4:19 PM I won't lie - it is hard to let them go - even for a moment - let alone all day - and my first day back at work - I cried my eyes out.  I worked in retail and every time I saw someone with a baby I just felt terrible - BUT - financially - I had no choice but to work, I was a single mother and had to do something.  If you are financially capable to take a little more than normal time off with your baby - do it - BUT if you need to work you will find a way to make yourself go back.  You do not have to tell them before you have the baby that you aren't coming back - if you plan on going back tell them that - they might hire a temp to fill in for you till you come back (which is what I'm doing now - temping for a girl on maternity leave).  If you like your job - I'd try and go back to work - since it isn't every day you find a job that you like!
