The other day I heard a lady announce how she was just days away from being a new grandma.  "My daughter is doing great and any day now I will meet my new grandson."  She was full of sunshine, you could feel her excitement.  The she said something so common that left an uneasy feeling in my gut.  When an other lady she was talking to responded saying "Well I hope everything goes well, and God Bless you."  The soon to be new grandma said " Well, I will just pray for that the baby has 10 fingers and 10 toes."  My head lifted and I repeated that over to myself, ten fingers and ten toes.  What does that really mean?  I've must have heard that saying thousands of times and never thought about it until that moment.  I was hating the way it sounded.  Does that mean your child is healthy, does it mean he has no challenges, no disabilities, and he is perfect.  How do you explain that simple common saying to so many mothers who give birth to babies with 10 fingers and 10 toes and later find their child has Autism?  My son has the most beautiful ten fingers and precious ten toes.  However he is unable to connect with this silly world.  He is in a world of his own and I just wait until he can one day help me understand it.  Then I think, would it have been better for him to be born with out the completion of 10 on hand and foot and yet be able  to communicate what he feels.  Do people realize how stupid that saying is?  ...And I know, it is a thoughtless pattern of words and we do not say it in spite.  Though is does remind me of the obstacle my 6 year old boy must take when I touch his hands and fold four fingers down and teach him to point.  When my hand over hand games are for the purpose of teaching him to hold a spoon or brush his teeth.  Then there is that magical laughter when you see all ten fingers flapping like wings as he jumps with excitement.  Oh how I can not forget about his ten tippy toes he uses to run from my grip to chase anything that moves.
