We think it's a Brown Recluse (though I initially believed they never grew bigger than a quarter)...it's about 4 inches long including the legs, but I haven't labeled it yet for sure. if any one knows or has come across something similar please comment!

GREAT NEWS! This spider is NOT a Brown Recluse! It is a Southern House Spider of the Genus Kukulcania Hibernia. It is a crevice weaver, which means it lives in your house up in the crevices. It is a good spider. It kills other bugs in your house and can get very big. I think mine was a female (I turned her loose in the yard and it's anyone's guess if she survived) but mostly the females stick to their webs. It's generally the males the venture out scampering across ceilings and such! Anyhoo, this spider is not dangerous and is not usually aggressive. It is, however, fairly blind, and thus, will scamper across anything in it's path whether alive or not. Sometimes they play dead when they think they are being preyed upon. I have more pics below. Please compare to your spiders. Remember that bugs are necessary evils in our lives. Kill Brown Recluses, Black Widows, Hobo Spiders.... this spider of mine is a good one.

Jun. 2, 2008 at 11:23 PM Not sure, but big scary toothy crawly thing should suffice! I say stay away from it and compare pics with a spider website. Maybe a (bugologist? lol) could help?

Jun. 2, 2008 at 11:25 PM I am for sure.  I belong to a bug website but they are having some technical issues right now and won't be back up for a bit.  I figured in the meantime, maybe some of you mamas would know!

Jun. 2, 2008 at 11:52 PM I am not sure if it is a brown recluse or not, but I did find a webpage that has very graphic pics of what one can do to a person! http://thefuntimesguide.com/2005/07/brownrecluse.php  There is a pic of what one looks like on there... a bit different than the one you show, but thats not to say ther may be a difference in the male and females? Maybe you could take a pic to a local hospital, or agriculture dept?
