Victoria is 4 years old and wants to be a ballerina.  Victoria likes painting pictures, dancing, blowing bubbles,  playing with play doh, and making yummy things to eat.  I think she prefers to eat them than make them.

Victoria was born 9 weeks premature and spent 4 weeks in the NICU.  But our journey did not end at the end of those 4 weeks.  It was just beginning.  Victoria has cerebral palsy.  What is cerebral palsy?  Here are some thinks that will tell you the text book facts about it:

http://www.cerebralpalsysource.com/About_CP/facts_cp/index.html

But I am more interested in telling you what cerebral palsy is to me:

Cerebral palsy is putting my baby to sleep for not one but two MRIs and feeding her Popsicles when she woke up.

Cerebral palsy is making multiple 2 hour drives to the hospital her doctors were at(one way).  Cerebral palsy is calloused knees from crawling for almost 4 years.

Cerebral palsy is my little girl being able to do more chin ups than her dad because she literally uses  her arms to pull up onto things.

Cerebral palsy is sores on her ankles from where her braces pinch her.

Cerebral palsy is holding my daughter on my lap while she gets botox and comforting her after because it hurt.

Cerebral palsy is her forgiving the shots once given a small bottle of bubbles to blow on the way home.

Cerebral palsy is making my daughter use her crutches even though it takes her 3x as long to get anywhere and refusing to let her give up.

Cerebral palsy is telling her to sit in her special bench because the "w" position is a no-no and she can't sit with her legs out front.

Cerebral palsy is having to decide which ONE assistive siting device to get because insurance will only cover one.

Cerebral palsy is meetings with teachers and therapists to make a plan(called an IEP) to make sure she has the tools she needs to succeed.

Cerebral palsy is starting to leave the house 30 minutes before I really need to because its not a speedy condition.

Cerebral palsy is weekly therapy sessions.

Cerebral palsy is talks to consider invasive surgery to help her walk better.  Not perfect, but better.

Cerebral palsy is watching my daughter "dance" and declare she's a ballerina and having my heart break inside because she can't be a ballerina except for in her dreams.

Cerebral palsy is a great big hug and kiss at the end of every day.  Cerebral palsy is a gift I will cherish till the end of time.

Cerebral Palsy is looking into the eyes of an angel and knowing she IS a ballerina.
