In short, evolution is as close to being a scientific fact as is possible for any theory, given that science is open-ended and no one can predict with certainty what may change in the future. The prospect that evolution by natural selection, at least as a broad mechanism, will be overthrown in the future is about as likely as the prospect of finding out some day that the Earth is really flat. Unfortunately, those who regard these scientific facts as a threat to faith have chosen to distort and misrepresent them to the public.

See, this is the part that boggles my mind ...

Unfortunately, those who regard these scientific facts as a threat to faith have chosen to distort and misrepresent them to the public.

I can accept that there are people who are ignorant of the facts. I can even accept (but not really understand) those who CHOOSE to remain ignorant.

But someone who KNOWS better - and still go around twisting the truth? WHY? Why would you deliberately LIE to people? The only reason I can think of is power. Those who have it want to keep it. And keeping people ignorant has historically kept people in power.

Either that, or they really are rendered incapable of rational judgement (or moral decision) by their fanaticism. They somehow convince themselves that they are right. OR they convince themselves that they are IN the right - and therefore whatever they do or say is justified.

Either way - scary.

Thanks for the thought-provoking quote. :/ Ugh. I need some coffee.

DING DING DING DING DING!!!  give that lady a cee-gar!  power is it all right.  fanaticism seems to me an integral part of that "ignorance keeping people in power" scenario.
