Hmmm.... what to put here...

I grew up in a tiny little town in NEPA, on a lake, with no cable and a black & white tv.  Really!  My parents were (are) teachers, and we spent the summers reading, reading, reading.  When I was little, I liked the Choose Your Own Adventure Series.  And the Xanth Series by Peirs Anthony... then, as I grew into my teen years I read tons of Dean R Koontz ( I know....) Stephen King, Sydney Sheldon.... they excited me, this new and wild way adults interacted with each other... having sex and saying f*%k ALL THE TIME... for a while I read Danielle Steele, youknow, where every heroine is a perfect size five and has almond shaped eyes and drinks rivers of champagne and is the heiress to some fortune or another...

I can remember summers "down the shore" in a rental in NJ with my beach books... we used to tease my mom because she would get SO into reading, we thought she couldn't hear or see us (I now know better...oops!)  I remember being disappointed to read the last page because I didn't want the stories to end... for a while, over those childhood summers, I was a gorgeous wealthy heiress, I was the Princess of Xanth, I was a wild-eyed adventurer, the wife of a mafia boss, the girl who could see spirits and communicate with the dead.

Today, I teach high school English.  I am forever with my nose in one book or another, one in the car, one in my purse, one or two on my desk at school, a few by the bedside table.  Books, fiction and nonfiction are a passion.  My kids tease me because (gasp, I have become my mother) when I am reading (whether during "Free read Fridays" at school or at home), the world can collapse and I will still be in my own, private world.

You know what?

I like it here.

Jun. 3, 2008 at 3:01 PM You sound a lot like me! I have books and magazines everywhere so I can read at all times. Dean Koontz is my all-time favorite! My boyfriend doesn't read and can't figure out why the bookstore, library and garage sale book table are the first places I go when we are out!

I was/am exactly the same way.  I remember leaving the library with an armload of books so big I could hardly see over it.  Still, walking into a library and smelling books brings me back to those summer days.  Even though it's hard to find time to read now, I usually have 2 or 3 books going in different places thoughout the house, and I sneak in a few pages when I can.  Right now, I'm reading A New Earth, Celestine Prophecy, and a book by Brian Weiss about past life regression, can't think of the name of it right now.

I loved the Choose Your Own Adventure Series also!!! I think I read every one! I was lucky enough to have parents that loved to read as well! I just finished "The Last Empress", that I picked up in the airport on the way to FL. I was glued to it whenever we were in the truck during the holiday weekend. Beautiful, rich, descriptive narratives and historical references about late19th century China.

See you at school!
