There is a lot written about Israel. The mainstream media in the States and in Europe will usually write about "the conflict". When there is a bombing of Israeli citizens or there is an Israeli army operation in Gaza we even make the front page. All over the internet and even on Cafe Mom people are writing about Israel. There is great support for Israel and there are those who would like to see Israel and its people gone for good. I would like to address the anti Israel crowd. Those who feel justified in painting the people of Israel in broad brush strokes erroneously comparing Israel to some of histories horrible regimes. It seems to them that it is perfectly politically correct. Just as long as its not done to them. I have no intention of doing that. I don't need to.

So who are we? I started to think of examples. All I had to do was go to work and take care of a patient from Jenin. He never imagined with what respect and kindness he would be treated. His apprehension vanished. True, there have been cases of Palestinians stopped at the border and not able to get treatment. More often then not they do get treated. Lets not lose sight as to what causes the hold up into Israel. For example a mother and sick child were in an ambulance. The child lay on the stretcher while underneath him lay explosives. The idea was to get the explosives into Israel for a bombing. Whether the mother knew about the explosives was not made known and really isn't relevant. What is relevant is that sick people were being used in the war of terror against Israel. A young woman from Gaza had been treated for burns for months at Soroka Hospital. The young woman used her permit to enter Israel to attempt a suicide bombing at the hospital that treated her. Thankfully she was caught before a tragedy happened. These are just two examples of many that explain why the Israeli border police do what they do.

A few months ago I caught a story on the news about a woman from Gaza in Ashkelon's Barzilai Hospital. She was there to deliver twins. What touched my heart is what the citizens of Israel did. We know the situation in Gaza is hard. People donated everything from new baby clothes to a stroller for the woman and her children even as a katyusha rocket ironically landed near the hospital. The woman returned to Gaza and we would be in her thoughts as the qassam rockets are launched at Israeli civilians.

We have over a thousand refugees from the Sudan and Darfur. Some Sudanese fought with Egypt in the Yom Kippur War in October 1973 against Israel. Yet they risk their lives making the trek. They risk their lives crossing into Israel from Egypt. Many have been shot by Egyptian border patrols. The Israeli government was slow on the uptake but the refugees have been settled in Tel Aviv. Israeli university students are volunteering to help the refugees and their children. We sent aid and a search and rescue team to Myanmar to help the victims of the cyclone that devastated the area.

Israel is not the monster that the Israel haters want you to believe. Could we find a better way to decide who crosses our border? I hope we do. No one in Israel thinks that life in Gaza is what it should be. We know the people have great hardships. The Israeli's living near the Gaza Strip live under the daily threat of rockets. The government of Gaza states in their charter that there can be no negotiations with Israel for an end to the conflict. As long as we exist they will try to destroy Israel. The terrorist wing of this government operates from within the civilian population. No country in the world would quietly accept rockets and bombings. We may not have the answer yet with regards to Gaza but I do not think we should let our citizens be harmed to quench Hamas' thirst for blood. They want a lull. A lull to rearm and train. They propose nothing that could lead to a real peace.

The people that manage to hate a whole country and its people, the ones who are using a smear campaign against Israel only want you to see things in a distorted fashion. They want you to see things as if it all happens in a vacuum. Israel acts and the Palestinians are all innocent bystanders. Smoke and mirrors. The people that hate Israel do not take any responsibility for actions on the Palestinian side. They never mention them. It wouldn't further their hateful propaganda. So next time you come across hate filled propaganda against Israel realize what it is. No matter how someone may rant- it doesn't make it true. Those that spread hate are the real obstacles to peace.

Absolutely!  You don't hear in the media about things like how Israeli army dropped leaflets and made calls to Lebanese citizens warning them to evacuate before bombing began in the summer of 2006.  You do not hear true stories of Arabs who love Israel and rave about their treatment by Jewish Israelis.  If you do want to read such things, however, there is a nice site called Arabs for Israel that  you should take a look at.
