I was afraid to pierce her ears to start with b/c I had so much trouble with mine when I was young...mine always got infected and we ended up having to take them out...turns out I have sensitive ears and I am allergic to cheap jewelry..so we got real gold ones for the baby and I clean them at least 3 times a day,but now they're very red and sore looking, not really swolen or seaping though,is it possible they're infected?or is this normal, she does like to lay on them...please help!!!

Jun. 3, 2008 at 7:31 PM Ummm, why don't you just take them out? If she wants earrings later on, they can just re-pierce... To each his/her own, I just never really liked the idea of piercing a baby's ears, when they can't tell you what they want either way.

I know from experience that it's normal for the area to become red and a little swollen and it may last a few days. Cleaning the ear is good also but as soon as you see draining or puss I would call the doctor.

If they are red, have them checked out.  Have you taken them out to clean them?  Have you another set to put in. You could take them out, clean the lobes well, dip the end of the earing in neosporin and put it thru the hole, put some on the back of the earring before putting it on. Give it a day or so and see if the reddness goes away.  Red means  infection.  I have seen hair or cotton, something like that get caught around the earring base and cause harm.  Check her lobes out well, and get her checked out, just to be safe.

Hope this helps.

Are you being very, very gentle when you clean them?  I wouldn't get too worked up unless they seem to bother her.  Give it a little more time.  How long has it been?

Jun. 3, 2008 at 7:39 PM hey, I got my daughters ears pierced at the end of april and one of her ears looked red right by the piercing, but it was fine. Just clean it with alcohol..like alcohol pads or dip a cutip in alcohol and rub around it. You should be cleaning them twice a day and turning the earrings for about 6to8 weeks. also there was some crust around the earring on my daughter but it wasn't infected..now she's all good. good luck
