Real quick while Sebastian is occupied feeding crackers to the rats... I went to the Department of Health and Human Services today and met with the foster care coordinator (who it turns out is the mom of one of DH's best friends - what a small world!) and filled out the pre-application. Now we are on file as being interested in foster care, as well as the age / gender preference of a potential foster child. (Sometimes when homes are in really short supply, they have been known to call a family on the pre-application list and offer to expedite the process, so they are prepared for that right from the start.) We're looking at a 3-6 month process before we are a certified foster home. She thought it was wonderful that we were interested in infants and toddlers. Not a lot of people around here willing to take kids that young.
Our next step is to attend an "information session" which we are technically required to attend before filling out the actual application. The next scheduled meeting is in a month, but she told me that if in the next couple of weeks we wanted to come in for a private appointment, she'd do a quick session just for the two of us so that we could get started filling out paperwork. Sounds like they're really in desperate need for good homes, so I can't help but feel like we decided to do this at just the right time.
I am so excited about what this journey will bring!
