The following is in part from an article I read in a recent copy of the Essence Magazine.  I thought it was thought provoking.

The seven habits of Happy People

 1.  Hang out with joyful people.  Surround yourself with people who support and encourage you.

2.  Move consistently toward you goals.  Make commitments and practice keeping your word.

3.  Meditate on your blessings.  Be grateful even for small things- anything from a gorgeous sunrise to the smile of a loved one.

4.  Be good to yourself.  Eat well, get enough sleep and exercise regularly.

5.  Connect.  Build strong bonds with other people.

6.  Go to church.

7.  Give and forgive.  Do not hold on to anger and resentment. These rob you of your joy.  Let go the emotional weight.  Create an environment of connection and love by being generous.
