A tornado hit a Boy Scout camp in western Iowa Wednesday evening, killing at least four people and injuring between 30 and 40 others, KCCI-TV in Des Moines reported.

Courtney Greene, a spokeswoman for Gov. Chet Culver, said the tornado hit the Little Sioux scout camp.

Speaking from the state Emergency Operations Center, which is mobilized because of flooding across Iowa, Greene said authorities have been told of multiple injuries and the potential loss of life.

Hospitals in the area have been told to be on standby for injured patients.

The camp is located in western Iowa on the Harrison-Monona county line, north of Council Bluffs.

Iowa Homeland Security spokeswoman Julie Tack said a search and rescue team has been deployed to the camp.

Tack said there were 93 campers and 25 staff members at the camp. The campers were between 13 and 18 years old and were attending a leadership training camp.

DOT crews have been sent to the area with chainsaws to help clear a path for rescuers.

The tornado downed a large number of trees.

KETV-TV in Omaha reports that a scout master said there was adequate warning of the approaching tornado, but there was no place to seek shelter in the camp.

The scout master said the campers were essentially trapped by the tornado. He said many of the camp buildings were flattened. KETV reports many of those injured had head injuries.

The tornado struck around 7 p.m.

It's not just you........ we can't keep having 100 year floods every 5-10 years. We had 6" rain last week and are to have another 6" tonight and tomorrow. At this rate, my house will be in Missouri!

My prayers are with all of those who have lost so much in all of the terrible storms, tornadoes, floods, etc. that have been raveging our land, and for the Boy Scouts and their families.  God be with all of you!  My son is a Cub Scout and I am a Bear Leader.  I know how these boys and families are close knit.  They are all like family.  God is able to show his Glory and Grace in times of tragedy though.  He carries us through if we rely on Him.  I do believe we are living in the Last Days though.  If you believe with me, Jesus us coming soon!  These things are supposed to happen.  It's sad, but true.

God Bless you and your families,

Jun. 15, 2008 at 10:51 AM Where are you from? I live in Des Moines and the floods are pretty bad down here right now! I heard the about the tornado right after it happened and that is really sad... It makes me scared to let my children go places... Im going to be all strict and have to check the place out myself first! Seriously though, I was thinking... I think it should have been cancelled (boy scouts) with all of the severe weather that we had been having and not having adequate tornado shelter... plus half of them were hiking... what the heck??? I would not be a happy mommy!!!
