On Friday, I had received the final letter that I had been waiting for. It was to tell me if Hayley was selected to go to "Gifted Opportunities" at another area school. Which means she will be transferred if she made it in.

For the upcoming Third Grade list of prospective students, there were 120 students who had qualified for consideration. They had to narrow it down to 50 students to attend.

The student's acceptance automatically was based on their National Standard scores, other overall test scores and class/homework grades during their Second Grade year.

Well, Hayley WAS one of the 50 students in the top rankings to be asked to attend the program. All I had to do was say by checking a box that she will be attending.

Others were accepted as well. But, they are on a waiting list. If those that were asked to join decline the offer, then those on the waiting list will be asked, one decline letter at a time.

Sadly though, not all of the students got a letter to even be on the waiting list. Some, due to having the lowest overall scores, while deemed gifted, were turned down for this program. BUT!!!.... They will still receive Gifted Services at their zone/base school.

Either way, for all of the students, it is a win-win situation. All of them will be in some type of Gifted Program. To all of the students in grades 3 through 5, I say "congratulations!!". Every one of them have worked hard and have earned their placements. No matter where they will be.

Thanks Linda. I am proud of ALL of the students...Even the ones I don't know, lol. They are all so smart. And it is such hard work to accomplish what they have to be in ANY of the Gifted programs.

Hayley is reading at almost a mid-4th grade level and doing upper 3rd grade math. So, by Spring, she will probably do around beginning to mid-4th grade math and in the 5th grade range reading/writing work.

Jun. 16, 2008 at 7:10 PM That is great!  I wish all students could have the enrichment that those in the gifted classes get.  But one definition of "gifted" is taking less time than average to understand new ideas.  I guess it isn't possible for kids who don't pick up on things as fast; there just isn't enough time in the school day/ school year.  I've been so happy with the accelerated instruction Abby receives at her neighborhood school.  I'm sure Hayley will blossom with the added challenges and interesting things she will be exposed to.
