The school year just flew by. When May came along I couldn't believe it was almost over; all the homework, the crying, the fundraising and PTA meetings and my kids had made to the next grade level and I had somehow made it through with what's left of my sanity. I allowed the calm wave of relief to wash over me when about a week into summer vacation the thing that I dreaded most even more than all the headaches that come with having kids in school....the summer time blues and cries of bordem that echoed through the house. I couldn't believe it! They had only been out for one week and already they were bored out of their skulls! And when they weren't "bored" they were fighting like a bunch of pit vipers. These, my sweet children who drove me crazy all year waiting for summer were now driving me even crazier now that it was finally upon them. My son has autism and has a summer bridge program every year so that keeps him occupied for about six weeks but the girls are killing me. I've tried baking projects, and water play and girls spa day where we polish nails and dress up etc. but their attention spans are so incredibly short and they just expect me to entertain and amuse them all day everyday! This of course while I take care of my 9 month old who is mobile and is enjoying her new found freedom. I just don't understand it? Maybe I'm old fashioned or maybe just OLD but when I was a kid I had to entertain myself! My grandparents watched me while my Mom worked and they did take me places (camping etc.) but most of the time they just did their normal daily routine and I had to either do what they were doing or find something else to do AND I didn't have any siblings to play with like my kids do. I just get so angry when I hear them say all day how bored they are and that there's nothing to do...it's only two weeks since schools out and I'm already counting the days until the first day of school! Am I horrible?
