Prom accessory that is a bunch of ribbons together -a Texas thing?

I had a friend who lived near Houston who, at thier prom, had these weird ribbon thingys that all the girls wore, or carried around. I think they consisted of a lot of long ribbons in the school colors, tied together at the top, left to flow down to the ground when carried. Was it a Mum? or what the heck was it? Anyone ever
