I don't know if it's popular but it certainly has been around forever.
"whatever"
When I hear someone say in response to something I have said "whatever" it's like someone running there fingernails down a chalkboard.
"whatever" has to be a deep seeded pod that waits to grow and spring up in a teenager since birth.
You know the eye-roll and the sarcastic tone with those words "whatever" spew forth out of the mouth of your baby...that same baby you couldn't get enough kisses from when they were sweet and cute and smelled like baby powder.
All of a sudden that word springs forth and you realize the curse your mother put on you as a teenager has finally came true....
The curse of, someday your going to have a child and there going to say "whatever" to you and you'll know how it feels curse.
Yeah, that curse. *sigh*
I know my mother hated it and I've been cursed for rolling my eyes and spewing the same words at my mother.
I guess it will always be like this, as long as there are teens and mothers to carry on the curse.
Someday I'll get fed up and look at my daughter and repeat that curse to her..."someday your child....
I can hear it now...Yeah yeah yeah, "whatever" mom.
Uh huh, yeah, you'll see.

I know what you mean. My (soon to be) 19 yr old daughter says it a lot and drives me batty! I must admit when I get pissed at my fiance I tend to say it also. It's usually after he makes promises to do this or that, fix this or that...I end up saying "yeah, yeah, whatever."
A slang expression that drives me buggy is "That's so gay." My kids are notorious for that! Grrr! Makes me mental for some reason. Just my opinion but it makes them sound as if they have a serious lack of intelligence.
