I want to cry/throw up

I think we may have cockroaches in our home. This is one of the only bugs that really creep me out. I killed one and didn't think anything of it (I thought that perhapes it was some other type of summer bug) but then more and more are starting to pop up. So of course I googled cockroaches and the bugs I've found look exactly like the american cockroach. Upon researching them I found that they help promote childhood athsma on several sights. This scares me a lot, I don't want my little girl to end up with athsma!!! And not only that is I made homemade 7-layer bars and I've shared them with my daughter and my mom has eaten some. I didn't cover them with too much because I wasn't worried about this problem earlier. I only covered them with tin foil. So far I've found three. One on and under a paper, one under a washcloth. And tonight I found one swimming in my toilet when I was going to use the bathroom. I killed two and flushed the other one. But I wont use that bathroom now because I don't want it swimming back up the toilet.

Does anyone know how to get rid of cockroaches without paying too much? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!
