I wanted to give a short excerpt from the book, Hostage to Her Heart.   Tara and Danny had married out of convenience, because of Tara's pregnancy, and she has always struggled to fall in love with him because Danny is a Royal Navy Officer, who seemed to be sent away just when she needs him most.

After a lot of soul-searching, Tara decides to give their relationship one more try, just when he's leaving again for a new mission. His intent is to leave her with freedom to really be the Mrs. of their home while he's away, including money to burn for new clothes, considering she isn't pregnant any more. He's a conservative man, who likes a simple woman and not one made up with alot of makeup. She's balked about it before, but now, for some odd reason, she seems like the woman of his dreams, but is it too late? He's made one drastic mistake:

... Yet, somehow, upon his return, Tara already revealed choices. She looked so pretty in the smock gingham blue shirt and the white stretch pants. The fragrance she wore seemed sweet and not overbearing. Even her makeup wasn’t over done. The light eye shadow made her eyes so defining! And now, on the stair landing, he never expected her to stand there and squeeze his hand so hard. That suggestive look made him want to stay, but it was too late to change things. He was out of time.

“Well, I must be going on my way. Susan is driving me to Heathrow and will keep the car for awhile. Goodbye, dearest Tara. Take care,” Danny said in a lame voice and tried to turn away. Instead, her warm hands kept him at bay and he had to turn to face her again. Her pupils riveted back and forth and he wondered what she wanted. Then she clutched his waist.  With an urgent thrust to move his body forward, she plastered a hard but ardent kiss upon his surprised mouth.

Their bodies melded together. Electricity flew throughout every nerve in his body. What pure ecstasy to feel a kiss like that from her. His eyes widened, but then he closed them to drift freely along within immense pleasure. When their lips finally pulled apart, he looked at her face, happy that she seemed it wasn’t the worst thing to occur between them. Long lashes blinked slowly and her hands caressed his back up and down.

“Will you write, Danny? Please?” her voice, soft and sexy, charmed his mind. He couldn’t move at all as it felt so good to be close, to feel the soft curves in her hips and watch the rise and fall of her bosom. Tara dumped fuel onto desire by speaking low and whispery, “The letters you sent from Dartmouth were beautiful. I never realized how much you wrote with your heart.  It was nice. If you write again, this time I will too. Let’s fall madly in love through them.”

“Yes, of course,” Danny replied giddily, feeling out of whack as she released him then. He stumbled down to the next step, “I’ll write every day, every chance I get. I promise.”

Was he in a surreal dream? Did he just find heaven? He fumbled for the suitcase and swung the garment bag around his shoulder. Somehow he ambled down to the foot of the staircase and only looked back once before exiting the front door. She stood there, her eyes sultry, biting a lower lip. It was a look that sent him to the moon. She blew a random kiss with her hand and mouthed, “Stay safe.”

Within minutes, he was in his car, driving down that dirt road with the radio loud as he listened to a corny love song on a radio network. It seemed nowhere near contemporary. “I can write a better melody”, he mused out loud, realizing it had been ages since thinking about music, a long time passion. Tara filled his heart with song.

What just happened? The woman actually kissed me! Oh, God, thank you!

Dust blew in the air and the scent of the tall grass along the road filled his nostrils. He felt so light, like an albatross was lifted from his soul. All thoughts bounced in every direction. Surely upon his return, things would be different. He just needed to write and call on occasion.  That kiss inspired the low ember in his heart to re-ignite like an Olympic torch and he couldn’t fathom what changed, but perhaps they were equal now, for the wrong done. Except that Tara didn’t know about his sexual escapade with Rosemary and Eileen. There should never be a reason to discover it.
