Ok, I'm an English teacher, so I really just need to do this to keep my sanity! LOL! Most people never paid attention in school to remember these things, so here's a little refresher course for those who want to know.
Homophones - Words that sound the same but are spelled differently.
To - a place - I'm going to the store. Do you want to go to the movies? I don't know what to do with my life.
TOO - extra, more, in addition to. It's too hot in here! You're too funny! I want to go too. I'm too pissed to talk to you. (If you can use also or extra, then you should spell it too.) There are EXTRA O's to show it's MORE
TWO - Number Two elephants walked to the store.
HERE - a place - works with HERE, THERE, WHERE "Get your little ass over here now!" Can you come here please? I don't want to be in here, it sinks!
HEAR - sound - look for the word EAR (HEAR) "It's too loud in here! I can't hear!" Can you hear me now? Good! Did you hear that thunder last night?
THEIR - property - It belongs to someone - It's their job. It's their coat. It's their turn. Do you want to go to their house? I don't want to go to their house!
THERE - again "here" = a place - Don't go in there! I've been there! Oh I don't think so! Do go there honey! We've never been there before.
THEY'RE - contraction of They Are - If you can replace "They're" with they are - you're using the right word. "They're so silly!" OMG! They're the funniest kids ever! They're so mean!
YOUR - property - it belongs to you - "It's your opinion." It's your mess! Your turn to do the dishes. Are you going to clean your room? Are we going to your reunion?
YOU'RE - contraction of You Are - If you can replace "You're" with You Are - you're using the right word. You're a complete dumbass! You're a dumbass, too! You're going to get burned! You're going to bed right now mister!
Later Taters!
Oh, and let's not forget "woman" and "women". My students never seem to get that one right. Funny, they never mess up "man" and "men".
This is proof that teenagers are illogical. lol.
Would've is a contraction of the words "would" and "have" - not a combination of "would" and "of".
The same goes for "could've, should've" - it's "have", not "of".
Sorry, there's a mom who says she is an elementary school teacher but she constantly misuses these words until it's become a major peeve to me!
