I Recently attempted to put up a detailed educational video that documented this phenomenon, but it was deleated due to content of nudity.  So unstid I have choosen to post the facts about MALE LATCTION.  And yes, believe it or not, it is possible and even rising in popularity!  I have included a link to an educational vidoe documentating Male lactation.  Some of this video does display moments of nudity.  If you are easily offended by nudity I ask that you not watch the video.  I welcome any and all mature comments related to this topic.

The phenomenon of male lactation in humans has become more common in recent years due to the use of medications that stimulate a man's mammary glands. Though boys and men have nipples, many are unaware that they also have mammary glands. In ordinary circumstances, there is so little mammary tissue that it is unnoticeable; if the male breasts develop visibly, the condition is called gynecomastia. Under the appropriate hormonal stimulus—that nature provides to human females when they become pregnant and give birth—the mammary glands of human males can also produce milk.[1] The volume of milk produced is low relative to that of a lactating female. Newborn baby boys (and girls) can occasionally produce milk because of the intense hormones involved in their mother's pregnancy and the hours of childbirth; this is called witch's milk.

Male lactation is most commonly caused by hormonal treatments given to men suffering from prostate cancer. Female hormones are used to slow the production of cancerous prostate tissue, but the same hormones also stimulate the mammary glands. Male-to-female transsexuals may also produce milk owing to the hormones they take to reshape their bodies. It can occasionally be a side-effect of antipsychotic medication. Extreme stress combined with demanding physical activity and a shortage of food has also been known to cause male lactation. The phenomenon occurred in survivors of the liberated Nazi concentration camps after World War II.[1] Some American POWs returning from the Korean and Vietnam Wars also experienced male lactation. Anthropolist Barry Hewlett has observed male breastfeeding among certain Pygmies of central Africa for whom "male and female roles are virtually interchangeable".[2] The phenomenon has also been observed in isolated cases in other parts of the world.[3]

The phenomenon of male lactation occurs in some non-human species, notably the Dayak fruit bat (Dyacopterus spadiceus), and the lactating males may assist in the nursing of their infants. In addition, male goats are known to lactate on occasion.[4]

In Why Is Sex Fun?, Jared Diamond reports of male and female cancer patients being treated with estrogen who proceeded to lactate when injected with prolactin, and suggests that mechanical stimulation of male breasts, by releasing prolactin, could result in lactation. He also mentions teenage boys lactating after self stimulation of their nipples.

It actually is!  I just consider it to be more motivation for women re-lactating and building their milk supply.  I figure If it is proven and documented fact that a Man can lactate and supply adequate nutrition for a child a woman certainly can!

That was my exact thought Tina!  I may adopt before my VBAC and I really hope to relactate for that baby!

I'm sorry if this makes me narrow-minded and shallow.

I don't want to get all uptight about gender roles or anything.... I really do consider myself a feminist.

But I strongly believe that the MIRACLE of childbirth and breastfeeding belong to WOMEN.  I'm really disgusted by the idea that men could take over these gifts or that they'd even WANT to take them over.  It's just.... wrong.

Men get pissed when women join the army or take jobs as firefighters and police officers.  They say it's 'not our place' because we don't have the brawn and the balls to handle it.

And now MEN want to be MOTHERS...?  

And anyway, what's wrong with being a father?  Is it not fulfilling enough?

Jul. 12, 2008 at 6:00 PM kimberleee382--m,y husband agrees that it blurs genders too much, but I know of at least one story where the baby would have died had her father not spontaneously lactated when his wife died. He was able to feed his baby (no one else could/would and formula is akin to death in that part of the world due to filthy water) and save her life. I think the unique composition of male breastmilk is interesting and probably beneficial when added to female breastmilk.

Jul. 18, 2008 at 8:54 PM I think this is Crazy,to crazy..This,Childbearing,Giving Birth,& B/F should be left souly up to the women,That is Nature....Men in my opp.should not take the role of these gifts. Whether it has been done for thousands of years or 1 day it's still gross to think of my hubby sticking his lil nipple in our baby's mouth.Now don't get me wrong,I have told my hubby many times,Why didn't the Father do this one thing an make it possible for the Man to B/F,cause I need a break..BUT I was only kidding,Really only kidding..I think this in a way is Hilarious,Maybe I should ask my Hubby about this an see if he's willing to try it.LOL!!!         NO WAY!!!!!      "GOOD POST"
