Hey everyone I am searching for families that would be interested in sponsoring a foreign exchange student for the 08/09 school year... Our company is still in need of 130 families throughout the US. It is important that we find families as soon as possible as we need to get all paperwork turned in ASAP as all our students are due to arrive into the US around the 28th of JULY. If you or someone you know would make a great candidate for a host family for these students please let me know. (ANOTHER OPTION IS TO BECOME AN ARRIVAL FAMILY- families would need to be able to care for children for around 3 months- give or take- until I can find a permanent home for the child!) (3rd OPTION- PAIR UP WITH ANOTHER FAMILY AND HOST THE CHILD HALF A YEAR AND LET THE OTHER FAMILY HOST FOR HALF A YEAR!)
Here are the qualifications and some simple questions I have answered ahead of time!
**English must be the primary language **minimum of 25 years of age
**have seperate bed for a child (must be in a seperate room from adults-may share with other children)
**all individuals living in the home must pass a criminal background check
**Be able to provide 3 references that are not family-1 must be professional
**Able to supply a steady home and guidance for the children
***Do these children understand English?***
All the children in our program have studied English for a good part of their lives and are tested for English proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. All children must pass the SLEP with a minimum of a 43 which according to most colleges is an intermediate level of English-meaning you can talk normally to the student and they wil understand.
***What if the child is a problem for me?***
Well the unique thing with our company is that once you have filled out all your paperwork and it has been submitted and approved, the foreign exchange student that you have chosen to host will be given your contact information and told to begin communicating with you through email and telephone or letters. The sooner you decide to host the sooner you will be able to start the communication process with your student, this will give you a beginning idea of your students personality before they arrive! However at times there is still problems after the arrival of a student (it happens they are teens) The first thing we will do is sit down together and get all sides of the problem-chances are it is just a break down in communication. However if for any reason we can not find a solution to the problem I will begin the process of finding another sponser family, I ask that I be given a minimum of 2 weeks to do this in order to get all the paperwork filled out and processed. (if this is not possible I may bring the child home with me as a last case scenario) If the child is out to break every rule then they may be suspended from the Face the World Program and sent home at their own expense.
***Do I get paid to host a child?***
No you do not receive money for hosting a child, nor do you have a significant out-of-pocket expense, (children have their own spending money for school lunches, clothes, extra curricular activities, and anything else they need or want) however each month that the child remains in your care you will be able to deduct on your taxes-$50 plus if you had to buy any thing special to accomodate the child (desk, bed, bedding, ect)
***What type of out of pocket cost will I have?***
Other than providing meals and a place to live (all the normal expenses) you should have no out of pocket expenses as the children are giving a monthly allowance direct deposited by their natural parents each month- this should cover their school lunches, extra clothing, if they want to go somewhere with their friends, if the family take a trip to an amusement park the child is expected to pay their own way unless the family is willing to pay for them(however not required of the family).
***What do I get out of hosting a child?***
Well i am hoping that you will be able to learn first hand about another cultures lifestyle as well as be able to share your experiences for the US. The lasting bond between a host family and their student can last a life time, many students come back to the US with their family to visit their past host families and also tend to invite their host families to come visit them as well.
