We drove up the coast and spent the 4th on the Long Beach Peninsula. The beach is 26 miles long, and most of it is driveable year round. The weather cooperated (we had a few light showers earlier in the day) and we got to watch a continuous fireworks display stretching from the the tip of the peninsula (about 23 miles to the South) to a couple miles north of us for about 2 hours before heading inside for rootbeer floats.
We were fortunate to leave for the coast in the evening and missed a lot of traffic heading out of town. Our trip took us 4 1/2 hours. Coming home wasn't bad either. We took a different route and made a few stops but, overall, the traffic wasn't too bad. I guess most people were planning on making the most of the long weekend.
