I had this conversation with the 6 year old girl I have custody of and thought it was worthy of posting.
Today is the 4th and my clinic (Animal Hospital) is closed for the holiday. Since it is a medical clinic we never really close. I had to go up the clinic twice today to make sure all the sick animal receive their IV fluids and injections. Well, Anne came with me since I was only up there for about an hour each time. She felt special going up to work with me. Well, the 2nd time we went up I gave her some paper to write on while I was working on the dogs. Well she wrote all over the papers "Anne Mullenix" (which is my last name, her current last name is her mothers last name). I didn't say anything about it to her. I do not encourage her one way or another in that aspect. Well, on the way home she stated she wanted to say with us forever and be Anne Mullenix. She said she wouldn't mind seeing her mom every now and then but she did not want to go back there. I try to be very honest with her about these things. So I explained to her about court and we will know more then (what I did not tell her is they are planning on closing the case on the 30th and this means she will be with us for a VERY long time, if not the rest of her life). Well, she started asking me about why her mom does not just do what the judge tells her.
So I went into my version of the Christian Journey talk. I told her every day we are to grow. Not physically but spiritually. I gave her this example, If I said a bad word today. I would feel bad about it, pray about it and when I work up tomorrow, I would say to myself, Today I am going to be a better person and not say the bad work again. I explained to her that some people know they need to grow and they work on it daily where other people do not care to grow, they are satisfied with where they are and they do not want to make changes. I explained to her some people, even good people are like that, they have the 'Take me as I am or leave me alone' attitude. We should be the type of people who desire to grow every day and try to become a better person everyday.
One of my favorite songs is MAD WORLD.  I like it because it is a sweet song but also because I feel like we live in a MAD WORLD.  Everyone is mad all the time, everyone thinking only of themselves.  How much better would the world be if we all realized we had growing to do.
When I was talking to Anne today I realized that part growing and bettering ourselves needs to include how we reach out to others, how we help those who are satisfied where they are and think that there is no reason to continue to grow. Maybe there is something that we can do if we decide tonight that we are going to be a better person tomorrow and the day after and the day after...
