Today I decided to start potty training Vanessa (she'll be 3 in October). I actually tried it right after Christmas and she did great the first day, but then got sick...long story short she thought that she needed to be sick to use the potty. I decided to wait until she showed signs she was ready again, but I went back to work full time in January and haven't had time to devote myself to trying again. I just quit my job to stay at home again and decided that now was the time to start again.
Today went pretty well. When she woke up this morning she was already wet and wouldn't go again so I missed the first time. Then I gave her breakfast and kept putting her on the potty every 5 minutes or so until she went again...however, I went to put her on the potty only to finds her peeing on the floor...so I missed the 2nd time too. I finally caught her the 3rd time and she was so excited and proud of herself for going. I also gave her a piece of candy for going. She loves candy so it makes a good incentive. She then went down for nap, but was wet when she woke up. We then took a bath and after bath time she sat on the potty and in a matter of a few seconds she peed again. She got another piece of candy and again was really excited about going in the potty. I made dinner and sat her on the potty before sitting down to eat, but she didn't go so I figured I'd try again after dinner. Well, after dinner I went to take her upstairs but she had already gone pee. She's a slow eater so I may have to take her mid meal until she gets the hang of it. After dinner we went swimming and I put a swim diaper on her just in case...sure enough while we were in the pool she pooped. Right after swimming she went to bed and I couldn't get her to go potty again before bedtime. Hopefully I'll be able to catch her in the morning to go because she has been waking up dry.
I think for her first day of potty training (after being scared of the potty for a while since the last incident) that she did pretty well. I hope that is gets easier as the days pass though, which I know if will. I'm a little stressed becasue I thought it would be easier then this. I get fustrated when she doesn't get there in time, and I think she does too, but I know she's still learning. Just pray that as the week goes on things get easier.
I've put pull ups on her for nap and bedtime, but the rest of the day I have "big girl" underware on her. I heard that it works better if they feel that they're wet, and pull ups feel too much like a diaper that they don't help much. I also let her sit on the potty while I read a story, if she doens't go by then I let her get up, but if she wants to get up sooner I let her. Then I try about every 5 minutes for her to go again, once I get her to go I wait about 30-45 minutes before trying again. I'm just not really sure what her schedule is as far as peeing goes. If anyone who has been here before has any tips please feel free to give me some advice.
I'll keep everyone posted as the days pass.
