I've been a sahm for 5 years now. My youngest is starting kinder this year. What am I going to do all day? Plus, my hubby's job is changing a little in August so we may need the extra income.

So I've decided to go back to school. I have a surgical technology degree and have been one for 12 years, but I also have a hubby who travels ALL THE TIME for work so I'm left being a single mom 80% of the time. The hours either start before daycare opens, or ends after daycare closes. So...back to school I go. Decided to do dental assisting because it is very similar to the skills I have already, the school schedule is easy, and the hours are MUCH more condusive to family life. The pay is a hair lower than what I could make going back to work in surgery, but the hours are so much better so I'll deal.

So, school starts next Saturday and runs the next 12 weeks. I will be done in October and looking for work. Hopefully part time if the money situation is ok, and full time if it's not. What a transition for my kids. My oldest was 3 when I quit working, so she doesn't remember mom not always being there. My youngest  will have to transition to a schedule in the a.m. that doesn't revolve around when HE WANTS to get moving. I feel a little guilty, but yet I am looking forward to the change and challenges.

I went to my dental appointment today (I've been to 3 over the last 3 months for extensive treatments) and was talking to my hygenist about school when the dentist walks in on our conversation. She told her that I'm going to school and she says "that's great! And when you're done, you can come work for me! I'm serious - we will have a job for you. We are opening a satellite office very soon down the road, and I know we'll have a space for you." HOW COOL IS THAT?!!! I absolutely love my dentist, and the office, and all the axillary people I've met that work there- seem really nice too. Plus the office is 3 minutes from my house, and the new office is 10 minutes away. Could it really work out that easily? I definately think I've made the right decision now!

Jul. 9, 2008 at 10:38 PM Congrats- seems like everything is falling into place for you. I was a sahm for 6 years. My son was about to start kindergarten when I started job hunting. There was a new grocery store opening so I applied. My husband drives semi so I know what it is like to be a single mom so much of the time. I can't depend on him to be home to get the kids on or off the bus. I told the store that I could work M-F from 8-3 and they said, you are hired. Summers I switch to Sat-Wed so we are home more often with then since my husband is home on the weekends. That was 5 years ago and I love it yet. I'm now full time and in the pricing department and love it. It just all fell right into place for me too.
