I am an issue voter. I find the issues that are MOST important to me and my family and see where the candidates stand on those issues. THEN I make my choice. Family values is a HUGE issue to me. I have three children and a wonderful husband. We are about to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary on Thursday. In September we will have been together for 12 years. I believe that family is important and that the break-up of the family is a huge contributor to the problems our country is facing today (drugs, gangs, violence on TV and in video games, children becoming more violent by the day, etc).
The Republican party is supposed to be the party of family values. The traditional family. Imagine my surprise when reading an LA Times article about the candidate the Republican party has put forth as its presidential candidate, an article that went into detail about his first marriage and how he treated his first wife.
Here's a quick overview of the article (if you want to read it for yourself, go to: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-divorce11-2008jul11,0,6546861.story )
John McCain married his first wife, Carol, in 1965. She had 2 sons from a previous marriage and John McCain and Carol had a daughter of their own. At least John McCain adopted her two sons as his own. Carol raised their children by herself when he was shot down in 1967 and captured. Carol joined the POW/MIA movement, never allowing America to forget that her husband was languishing in a North Vietnamese prison. She raised their three children by herself while he was a POW.
Then, in 1969, on Christmas Eve, she was in a horrific car accident. She broke many bones in her body and the resulting surgeries left her 5 inches shorter. She was permanently disabled. She had been a model.
In 1973 John McCain returned home as a hero. Immediately he commented to his friends that his wife, "...isn't the woman I married."
In 1979, still a Naval Officer, John McCain met Cindy Hensley at a reception for a visiting Senate delegation to Honolulu, Hawaii. At the time, John McCain was 42. Cindy Hensley was 24.
John McCain spent the next 9 months pursuing Cindy Hensley. He flew to her home in Arizona. All this time Carol McCain had no idea her husband was cheating on her.
Finally in February of 1980 John McCain sued for divorce from his first wife. In April of 1980 he secured a marriage license to wed Cindy Hensley. Notice the dates, yes, this was before his divorce from Carol was final.
His attorney for this divorce was George E. "Bud" Day. Does that name sound familiar? Yes, he was a POW with McCain and also the leader of the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth campaign against John Kerry in the 2004 presidential campaign.
John McCain and Cindy Hensley married only weeks after his divorce was finalized. He married his desire, he married the young one, he married the beer heiress.
Is this the man I want for President of the United States? Not anymore! This man was unable to remain as faithful to his wife during a bought of midlife crisis as she was during his imprisonment. This man pursued a woman half his age because he was thinking with his head, not the one on his shoulders. This man had an affair with a woman while still married to another.
This man is not one I would hold up to my sons as a role model. This is a man who viewed his first wife as a sexual object and she was traded in for a younger and newer model. I do not want this man being held up as a role model for the men of the future like my sons. I do not want this man being held up as a role model of what men are like for my daughter.
The way John McCain treated his first wife is despicable. So, what is McCain's response to the truths of his life? He has said (paraphrasing here) "It was all his fault, he was stupid and immature." I'm sorry John McCain but that does not excuse your actions. That does not excuse your behavior. My husband served in the military too. No, he was not a POW but he did miss the first 4 birthdays of our youngest son's life thanks to Bush's war.
I know that had I become disfigured while my husband was on active duty he would have returned home to his family. He would have stayed with me and our children. He would not have abandoned us for a woman half his age. THAT is a real man. THAT is a real role model. THAT is a man America should be proud of. THAT is a true American hero. One who remains with his family "in sickness and in health."
So go on John McCain, please find the nearest retirement home and check yourself in. I'm sure your lovely wife can afford only the best for you. Go enjoy the remainder of your years with your young wife... heaven knows the ugliness you stooped to to get her.
Comments:
I saw a similar article in one of the London papers (on line), which I also posted somewhere around here. Can't belive this hasn't gotten more play on the msm, but then again.. I guess we should be suprised by that.
Anyway McCain sure seems like a jerk to me.
Thank you everyone!
Mamma_Tree: I agree, he's a jerk! I wish the media would get on board with this one. I didn't know any of this until I read the article. I wish I'd known sooner.
Manicmondaymomm: Yes, pure evil. Actually, I consider this worse than evil, if such a thing is even possible.
