When I married my ex-husband, I inherited a whole kitchen full of tools and gadgets. One of the items was a silver cake cutter with a date and initials I didn't recognize. When I asked about it, he said it was from his previous wife's first wedding. I guess she didn't bother to take it with her.

The cake cutter became part of our family history as I felt compelled to point out that it was from my "second husband's third wife's first marriage" each time we used it. Eventually, our daughter named it the 'cursed cake cutter' with cur-sed being two syllables simillar to bless-ed.

I told my therapist about the cake cutter once as I was going through a sad divorce from my second husband after 14 years of marriage. The therapist looked at me as if I were nuts, but I objected that it was a family heirloom! My daughter has it now and she continues the story that it is from " her mother's second husband's third wife's first marriage".

Of course, it goes without saying that we would never use this utensil for someone's actual wedding! Bad luck not to mention bad taste! My ex-husband and I are both happily remarried for good this time. But what a comment that little cake cutter has to make about the state of society today!

I think it's great you kept it.  It's good to see some humor added to the irony of it all.
