Self-love is the only weight-loss aid that really works in the long run.

- Jenny Craig, diet guru

Today's quote was so perfect for how I've been feeling for about a month or longer. Actually, my whole life. Self-love, worth, esteem, confidence, etc. has always been something I have struggled with.

My depression started when I was 12. I began hurting myself in various ways that I wont describe in detail out of respect for the weak-stomached. It took me about a year to convince my mom that I needed anti-depressants. They aren't recommended for children under 18 but my mom grew up with depression as did my birth father who was also an alcoholic and drug addict and died by suicide.

My life has been a very bumpy road; a series of bad choices mixed in with several blessings. Thankfully in the past few years I seemed to straighten myself out after an opportunity to go to rehab, move to a new city, and pretty much start over. I began making better choices though I still had a ways to go.

When I became single and pregnant at the age of 19, I knew bad choices were no longer an option. Everything changed the day the doctors placed that gorgeous little boy in my hands. I know I am not perfect and never will be but I will no longer turn a blind eye to things I know can get me or my loved ones into danger. My son deserves the best life possible and it starts with my choices.

I still struggle today with loving my body but Jenny Craig's quote makes a lot of sense. If you go into a diet with a negative outlook on yourself and body, you're not going to make healthy changes. All you will focus on is fixing that tummy flab or losing just 5 more pounds but never really be satisfied. That is exactly how I have been and I just wanted to give up because I couldn't see the point anymore. But if you can love yourself and your body no matter how it looks and just diet to be healthier and exercise to be healthier - not specifically to lose weight or fix this or that - I think you can have much better results. That is going to be my new attitude. I'll let you know how it works for me!
