i was driving to my mother-in-law's yesterday.  For some strange reason, I took a way that I don't normally take.  When I got to the corner of a residential road that crossed a busy street, it was clear to me why I took that way.  I saw the cutest little girl.  She was about two years old, endless cheeks, eyes that could melt you and curls out the wa-zoo.  she was standing on the corner in the street.  not on the curb and not in the grass. she was going to cross it and she was all alone!!!

To get to my mother-ib-law's house, I should've turned right.  But you know I couldn't do that!  My baby was in the back seat.  I went straight, rolled down my window and told her to get in the grass.  Then I pulled over to the side of the road.  I got my baby out of the car (I'm surely not going to leave him alone - DUH!)  I aksed her where was her mommy?  She couldn't answer because she couldn't talk.  I asked her where she lived.  She ran up to a door (two houses away from the busy street) and I knocked on the door.

No one came.  The stormer door was closed but the main door was wide open.  I knocked again, only this time a little harder.  Still, no one came.  I asked the little girl if anyone was home.  She just pointed to the door.  I knocked a third time, banging ont he stormer door.  FINALLY, someone came to the door.  A girl about 15 years old.  I explained (quite frustrated!) that the little girl was in the street and was going to cross!  She could've gotten killed!  In Chicago, there has been a rash of crimes against children.  She is lucky I was the one who stopped...a concerned mother and not a psycho!

The girl merely said, "Hmph.  Who left the door open.  Thanks." and went inside!  That was all.  I understand it happens.  When my daughter was two, she was a little escape artist once.  I went running outside and found her on the sidewalk of our apartment headed for the parking lot.  I was terrified and yet grateful that I found her!  I was about 5 thousand emotions all at once.  This girl didn't even looked concerned.

What's going on with people?  Why don't people care about their kids?  They abuse them, neglect them, or think they're doing a great job, but don't give up anything for the child to have what they need.  I was so mad that this darling little girl was outside, alone, couldn't even tell me her name, and that the people inside didn't care enough to even ACT concerned.  It's disgusting!!  I swear, people need to take a test for common sense and level of caring before allowed to reproduce!

Go back and get the address and report it anonymously to child services.  Let them figure out if there is an issue.  Better safe than sorry.  That is so sad about the girl.  I am glad, though, that you were there and did the right thing.
