Food Stamps...

When I sat down at the computer today, I got to thinking about how blessed I am. My kids are healthy and happy, and Mickey and I are able to give them everything they need. Then I thought about the parents who aren't that blessed, and it made me teary-eyed to know that they're judged and ridiculed simply for getting the assistance needed. I guess it's just a reflection point...This is not a journal for debate!!! Don't like it? Move around!

Less Than Human? (A Poem)
She ducks her head in the checkout line
Embarrassed that someone will see.
Not the candy or the ramen or the soda pop--
Just that she's paying with her EBT.
She knows they'll judge and whisper,
Some even admonish and preach.
But who's to say she doesn't WANT a better life???
She's TRYING...it's just out of reach.
Times were hard in the family last month
The kids' daddy--he's been laid off.
The bills piled and the frosting on the cake,
The baby has a horrible cough.
There is no money for food,
No money for the baby's meds.
To get the cash for the precious prescriptions,
She sold everything but their beds.
So she tucked all her inhibitions away
And swallowed all her pride.
Went down to the food stamp office that day,
Got in line, waited her turn, and applied.
The card came in the mail...FINALLY!
So she went to the store to get food.
Picked up her items and felt the cold stares,
'Cause for her, those steaks were too good.
How dare she get steak, how dare she get produce!
Doesn't she know those are for people who PAY?
She should stick to hot dogs and canned goods;
THOSE are for people living THAT way.
The woman shudders as she swipes her card.
She knows what happens next...
The cashier will smile and ask of her...
Credit, Debit, or check?
She'll bear the stares as she answers,
As meekly as can be,
"I'm paying for it with food stamps today,
This card is an EBT."
Although maybe no one will bug her,
Maybe they've paid her no mind...
There are still those who berate her
As if she's not considered humankind.
The woman has done no harm to us,
She just needs a little extra help.
I'd rather see her swipe that card,
Than starve or risk her kids' health.
WHY did she go bringing kids into this,
When she can't even find a job?
She knew that man of hers was no good,
She knew he was just a slob.

Those things are nothing new,
She's heard them all before.
They even told her to get herself fixed,
When she refused, they called her a whore.

Should she be forced to give up the ability
To bear children, to make life?
Does everyone deserve to be kicked when down,
Made fun of because of strife?
You wouldn't want anyone to say that to you.
You'd be fighting mad at the very least.
If you don't think she deserves to eat, that's YOU.
But consider NOT being a prick & keep the peace.
Don't be so quick to judge or berate her
For buying chips, candy, cookies, and pizza.
She is no LESS deserving than you or I...
She just doesn't have Amex or Visa.
This woman could be your neighbor--
Right down the street, or next door, it's true!
In a different situation, she could be me.
In a different situation--she could be YOU.

momie...

This really hits home! My husband and I separated 2 months ago and he won't pay more then $200 in child support a month. Since I lost my job because my girl was sick and he wasn't anywhere around to help out. I have to use the $200 on bills (which doesnt go to far).

Because of all this I had to apply for food stamps. I really hate how people assume that I have always lived on assistance and that my kids or myself are not worthy of food or housing. It's really a blow to someone that has worked hard to move up but was knocked down when it wasn't expected.

Love this post its sooo true! We are having a real hard time right now and we are both working. People really shouldnt  judge others. We had everything then my dh lost his job and just recently got a new one and we got off them. Its tough out there and people have to do whatever they can to get by. Some people don't understand that and it irks me. They dont know how hard it is to even go and apply for foodstamps yet alone use them in. It is degrading because there are people who just sit on their butts and collect them cuz they dont want to work. Then there's people like me who really need it for whatever reason and they get looked down on. People in this world make it so hard to just live sometimes! Thanks for your post! :)

Wonderful post! Judgemental-ism is a rampant epidemic in America today and with a bit more compassion and understanding, the world would be a better place to live. Thanks for your eloquent words!

Talan...
This is awesome! I'm on food stamps right now because i had my son when i was only 18, i'm now 20 & he's almost 2 so he eats alot more than he use to. So the whole 86 dollars a month i get out of food stamps helps, it doesn't go far...even tho i'm a working single mommy & i live with my mom we still get barely anything. Sometimes it upsets me when ppl who sit around and just collect get wayyyy more than i do, or because they pop out another child, they get more. I'm trying to make a better life for both me & my son...

Its sad what people say about people who get assistance .I do get food stamps .. 113.00 a month for a family of 4. My husband is a disabled Veteran and we just dont get enough to get everything that we need. I am currently going for my High School diploma and I will then be able to get a job and help support my family. People that judge need to set back and think.. what if something happened to my husband next week.. would I be able to care for my kids ??? If something happened to me.. would he be able to care for them? We never know what tomorrow holds for us... Thanks for sharing this and showing that there are some caring people out there! Many blessings to you

MyndR...

that was a beautiful piece!!!!!!!!!! my husband and i are both laid off  right now, and were trying to get assistance. but what many  people  dont realize (unless theyve been through it) is that it is really hard now a days to qualify. put  togeather were making less than 1000 a month, almost all of  which goes  for bills, we  go to the food pantry, but its only availible once a month.  theyre making us jump   through hoops to get help. i wish more people would see this peice and really understand its message. thanks once again for showing me that there are some people out there who dont judge.

peace  luv an bubble gum,

berta

LadyN...

I just KNOW this one better make #1. If its not on the hot list, I'm puttin' it there.

*HUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGS*

I wasn't in the system, but I know people who are. And I get reported at least twice a month for cussing out some bimbo for talking trash about FS and FA. To the mommas reading this and going THROUGH it, KEEP YOUR HEADS UP! It really DOES get better one day. SOoner than later but later than soon.
