He's only gained one ounce! In two months! I've been feeding and nursing like it's going out of style, but to no avail. Now I have to supplement with formula-- blech. I've also had to re-up my efforts to maintain my breast milk supply. I stopped using a pump when I stopped working-- perhaps I should go back to it. He'll need a supply for when he goes back to day care in September anyway.

I'm just so upset that I haven't helped my baby. I thought he was getting bigger-- he felt bigger. His clothes fit differently. I love nursing him. And I hate bottles and formula. (Don't get me wrong, I have used formula for the other two, and have no problem with other moms who use formula. But I just didn't want it for Nico.)

I had that happen with my son, who is now 10 years old, so obviously we got through it! I had to pump just fo increase the supply and I had to feed him every two or three hours (even wake him if sleeping) and make sure he nursed for at least 20  minutes (or was it 20 minutes per side?). Ironically, I had bottle fed my older daughter but for some reason I was committed to getting breastfeeding to work the second time. It took my son months to get back up to his birthweight, but eventually he thrived and I breastfed him for almost a year. I was seeing a lactation consultant and pediatrician the entire time.....After a while, it was all fine, and nursing was so easy, but at first it was hard. I don't even know why I was quite so committed to the whole thing.....But I do wish you luck. It can work out.....

I know what your feeling...

I sucessfully nursed my first 2 for a full year of their lives... Then comes #3... Nursed fine, then at his 4 month check up find he hadn't gained an ounce in 2 months... He was a skinny guy, but not fussy, sleeping all night, nursing every 2-3 hours during the day jsut like big sis and bro... After lots of tests and 3 days in the hospital I came to the realization that no matter what I wanted, its the babys health that counts... I pumped for 2 months and was about to go crazy because of it... It was like having twins, pumping then feeding... So he had 6 months of formula... UGHHH, not what I was hoping for... BUT i think the reason is that he's sensitive to tastes and even as an infant when i started on the pill again he didn't like the taste of the milk any more...

Now he's a loud, walking, toddler of a 15 month old... If i could i would have done it differently, but at least I tried...

Good luck and let yourself off the hook...You are helping your baby by giving him the nutrition he needs, even if its not from mommy...
