It's hard to believe last time I was on here was over a week ago, and I was writing about my upcoming c-section. Time really does fly with a newborn in the house.
Well, here's our story:
I went into the hospital at 4:50am on Wednesday the 16th. The nurses hooked me up to IV, asked a bunch of questions, and we basically waited and had some company until about 7:15. I kissed Ella, my mom, my step dad, and my in-laws and headed back to the OR. The nurses and doctor got busy hooking up a bunch of stuff, counting tools, etc. I got my spinal, which surprisingly hurt worse than I remember the epidural hurting. My husband was then allowed to come in. I wanted him in there while they were giving me the spinal, but it was alright. My Dr was really good at comforting me through it. It was a side of him I had never seen before actually. He's usually all business. He was really consoling. The spinal worked immediately, and they started cutting at 7:32 I think. At 7:44, my sweet baby peaked through & was born. He had a bowel movement inside me, which surprised me as he was born 11 days before his due date & there would have been no reason for fetal distress. I was very glad we decided to do the c-section then instead of waiting. Matthew Evan weighed 8lb 3 oz and measured 20 3/4 inches long. He's a perfect little gift from God. My husband went with the nurses to get him weighed and cleaned up. The dr and other attendants finished closing me up & took me back to my room, where my mom was waiting. A little while later, I was brought my baby. Some family came in & looked him over & then left for about an hour for lunch to give me a chance to nurse. Matthew nursed really well. The hospital stay was comfortable, well you know. As comfortable as it can be. Ella loved her baby brother immediately. She's such a joyful child and has been so so sweet with him. She was so excited holding him that she just flailed her arms about like she didn't know what to do.
We came home Friday afternoon. We've had some difficulty with getting a proper latch, but otherwise everything is great. Once Matthew latches on, he nurses really well. And he's producing lots of wet/ dirty diapers. He sleeps well, eats well, and is very easy going. Ella is very nonchalant about it all. We were talking today about what baby brother eats b/c she wanted to share her "goldfish" snacks with him. I said Matthew only eats mommy's milk. You're a big girl. So you eat big girl food. When you were a baby, you ate mommy's milk too. She said, "I don't wanna eat my Mommy's nipples!" HAHAHA!!! She says the funniest things.
Against the advice of not giving a bottle for the first 2 weeks, I have pumped & given a bottle about 6 times so far as my nipples were getting blisters. I figure I just have to do the best I can. And the pain of my baby's improper latch was excrutiating, worse than anything they did to me in the hospital. We're getting the hang of it though, and I'm confident that we'll be able to nurse successfully. It gets easier every day.
Matthew turned a week old yesterday. I've already been back to get my staples removed, and life is really great at the moment.
