The most touching story made the front page of the Jackson Citizen Patriot yesterday. Army Master Sgt. Shawn Dreffs of Jackson is being deployed to Iraq. He is set to leave on Sunday morning. Sgt. Dreffs has an 8-year-old daughter, Rylee. Rather than moping about crying about her adored Daddy leaving her, little Rylee wanted to send him off in style. She organized a parade for him in their neighborhood. Rylee recruited a dozen children with their bikes to march up the street, all in honor of her hero-her Daddy.
I have to admit, I got choked up when I read this. The way this little girl took it upon herself to arrange something for her father is amazing. Lately, it seems all we hear are the negatives about the war in Iraq-not that there is really a lot of positive to say about a war. In all of the stories of protests against the war and demands for President Bush to end the war, it is nice to see an American soldier treated like the hero that he is.
And that his daughter did this all for him.... Shows that Sgt. Dreffs is not just a good American, he is also a good father.
That above anything else makes him into a hero.
