Hello, My son is 7 and is waking up at night with leg cramps. This especially happens after we go for a bike ride. Rubbing them and giving him tylenol helps him get back to sleep.  Nothing seems red or swollen. Are these growing pains? Should I call the doctor? Any advice will be appriciated. Thanks :)

It could very well be growing pains or maybe low potassium.  Have him eat a banana each day to see if that helps.  If that doesn't work, by all means, bring him to the doctor for evaluation.  Hugs!

Try stretching before and especially after hiking or strenous leg work out. He probably is growing which is normal and if you do a lot of exercise with him he might need down time by slow stretching before and after doing an activity.  Tylenol won't help much.  Also a hot bath, soaking will help the muscles relax after stretching.

Jakob has had leg cramps off and on throughout the years, mostly when he is extra tired and/or we have been traveling in the car a lot. I have tried both potassium (banana) and Calcium with some success. Our doctor has been ok with the "growing pains" reasoning and occasional Tylenol.

Good Luck! See you soon
