Dominic had his 1 year well check up last Thursday. He weighed 19 lbs 2oz and was 30 1/2 inches long. He is developing well... he cruises, feeds himself, says 3-4 words that you can understand, waves bye-bye, points to what he wants, etc... however, the nurse practioner voiced some concerns about his weight. He is only in the 5th percentile. I'm not too concerned about this since Bella and Anthony were both in the lower percentiles at a year... (and she plotted his growth on the CDC's growth chart... after I got home, I plotted it on the WHO's growth chart for breastfed boys and he was at the 25th... ) Anyway, we discussed food allergies, since his eczema seems to be getting worse and most things that I feed him seem to make his butt break out in a HORRIBLE rash (see pics in my photos). We also discussed his iron level since he is still mostly breastfed and doesn't take any vitamins... So after his appt. we headed for the lab for a CBC and RAST (allergy test). After spending an hour there and four horrible needle sticks (my poor baby), we headed home...
Yesterday, the nurse calls... results of the allergy test are back... Dominic is allergic to cow's milk, soy, wheat, egg whites and peanuts! She also advised that even though the tree nuts was negative, he should still avoid them since many are processed with peanuts! She also advised that I would probably need to cut these things from my diet as well. He also will not be able to receive the chicken pox vaccine or flu shot as these are both prepared in egg whites... I was in shock! I suspected the milk and egg, but the rest came as a surprise! When I told Frank, he was in shock also... he thought it would come back negative. He apologized to me for thinking I was crazy! Oh and on a positive note... his iron levels were well within normal...
So, last night I head to Walmart to see what I can find that he can eat since everything I have in the house he can't eat... Did you know that ALL infant cereals have soy in them? ALL the toddler foods have wheat and soy in them. I thought about rice cakes, but the plain rice cakes are produced in the same facility where there are peanuts, milk, and soy. I managed to find the rice milk, oatmeal made from 100% rolled oats, and gluten-free rice spaghetti and noodles... I think we will start eating lots more fruits and veggies!
Also, please everyone, don't assume that because no one in your family has food allergies that your children won't either! Frank, Bella, Anthony and I are all food allergy free, and as far as I know, no one in either of our families has a food allergy. I wasn't as strict with following the 4 day wait rule, and look, my poor little guy is allergic to almost everything I've been feeding him! I can only imagine how horrible he must feel...
If anyone has any ideas as to what I can feed my poor little guy, please feel free to share because I am completely overwhelmed! I don't even know where to start...

So sorry Brenda!! This sucks. My friends little girl is allergic to lots of things, and she has to shop at specialty food stores. Hope you get it all figured out. Best of luck!!
Oh gosh Brenda, wowza. It will take awhile to find the right foods for him but once you do you will be set. I hope there will be some foods a the health food stores around that will work out!

i'm so sorry about that!!! Just be aware and make sure that he is aware as he gets older! My 4 year old cousin will not eat anything unless someone reads the ingredients to him because he has a peanut allergy too! And there are SOOOO many different kinds of gluten free foods out there now, you should have no problem finding things! Good luck!
