Today, in the United States 3,657 C-Sections take place.
OVER half of them are unnecessary or could have been prevented.

Do you know that a *NON EMERGENCY* c-section has a 2.83 (almost three times) chance of Maternal death than a normal vaginal birth?

Do you know that at least 12 women yearly die from a unnecessary scheduled c-section?

Thank you so much for this post.  My youngest is 15 months old, and I about had to have a C-Section because that is what the doctor ordered at the last minute.  Luckily, my water broke just as the doctor was leaving the room to get surgery set up and my daughter was born within 10 minutes naturally.  I was so scared, though, when she told us I was going to have to deliver C-Section, I mean, there was nothing during my pregnancy or labor that suggested that would have to be an option.  Here is my theory on what is going on:  Doctors are overloading their schedules with too many patients and it is easier to schedule a C-Section or to induce labor around their busy schedules so that they will not be called in unexpectedly.

My pregnancy was pretty normal, but then my doctor started scheduling sonograms for no apparent reason, at least it seemed that way to me.  Around 6 months, she told me that the baby was a little big and that maybe my due date was off a bit.  Okay, that was possible, but she didn't seem too concerned.   During my 8th month of pregnancy, I started cramping and ended up going to the hospital thinking I was in labor, or at least the start of it.  The doctor, examined me quickly and then sent me for another sonogram.  She got the results and proceeded to tell me that the baby was too small and was not thriving.  She estimated it only weighed about 4 pounds and that she needed to induce labor immediately, stating that my body was not giving it the nutrition it needed.  Uh, okay, whatever.   We were able to wait until the next day to induce so that I could find someone to keep my older children.

They put Cervidil (sp?) on my cervix around 6pm the night before, planning on inducing my by 7 A.M. the next morning.  Well, I went into labor and everything was going okay until the baby's heart rate dropped.  The nurse on duty was able to reposition me so that everything went back to normal.  Well, when the doctor arrived, she immediately started talking C-Section and ordered an epidural (which I specifically told her from the first that I wanted to go natural).  I was scared, but my baby girl came out before we were able to go that far.  And she weighed 6 lbs 2 oz, a whole heck of a lot more than 4 lbs!

I was not very impressed with the choices my doctor made and I will not ever see her again, especially during my next pregnancy.  After talking with other women who have used her, most of them went through similar situations to where they were induced or had a C-Section.

What happened to natural childbirth?  90% of pregnant women I run into today talk about their scheduled C-Section.  What happened to the surprise of childbirth?  C-Sections are scary due to the fact that it is surgery.  Any type of surgery can have complications.

Sorry my comment is so long.  Thanks again for posting this for other women to see.

Have a great day

Jenn

You poor thing!  I went through something similar. I was labeled "high risk" and essentially in the end I had a c-section with my son that was totally unnecessary.

Have you thought about contacting your local ICAN chapter?
