I have noticed something slightly scary upon us. A whole generation
that is nothing short of petrified of birth. As most other 20
somethings I am a member of social networking sites like myspace and
facebook, but recently a relatively new one caught my eye. Cafe Mom! A
website for mothers only, that focuses on mothering, parenting, and
just really meeting and networking with other moms. Problem? The
majority of the "Mothers" (I put mothers in quotes because you
occasionally come across the 13 year old on summer break pretending to
be 19 with 2 sets of triplets) on this website give out grossly
inaccurate and outdated information to each other.
Examples?
- VBAC's aren't safe (Which we know for healthy, low risk women without medical complications, they are)
- Cereal at 2 months is the norm (No, it's not, and no baby at 2 months old should be getting cereal by spoon and especially in a bottle)
- If you don't have an epidural you will regret it (When most women who have natural birth wouldn't think of any other way!)
- Home birth is dangerous and you and your baby will die (We all know the truth behind that so lets just shake our heads and move on.)
Shining examples of the people on here right?
So
I, in another one of my advocacy and education binges have set out to
try to educate at least some of the younger and more impressionable
women and potential mothers on this site. Pregnant, Trying to get
pregnant, young mothers with one, or two children at home, anyone
really who will listen.
But in the mean time, you have the
"veterans" who as shown above, give out the crap advice like it is
gospel chiming in with their rude two cents, name calling, and overall mind your own business comments. Why? Because the truth is in their face and they can't come back with anything else but snark.
I guess that is the end of my rant, per se.
But please, join me in helping to change the face of cafemom!
We need more crunchy moms!
We need more moms who think there is a serious birth crisis in this country!
We need more moms who will be outspoken like myself and stand up to these fountains of misinformation!
If you are interested in helping, please let me know.
Comments:
This isn't just the attitude you find on Cafemom. This is how the real world is. This is how women all over the country think and feel because they receive their information from outdated doctors and mother in laws.
I love it.
Sadly, CM is just another way for those old wive's tales to perpetuate. We can definitely use it as a tool to get the actual information out there, though.
Those moms are here. You're just not looking in the right place.
I'm sure you've noticed that if you dare try to actually impart logical medical facts into discussions about VBACS, early solids, etc. you'll be attacked and insulted (generally with things like, "Why do YOU care?" and the lovely hypocritical, "I don't have time for this! I have to go take care of MY kids!").
So, the majority of the moms you're looking for are in non-mainstream groups, sometimes even hidden and private. But we're there, I promise.
First I have to say..YOU GO GIRL!!! Thank you for getting all this out there.
Second, Sign me up! Anything I can do to help!
Signed,
Another crunchy mom!

Amen! Voting popular and pimping in all my groups, if it's OK with you? The amount of misinformation around here has got to stop! Sadly, though, journals with factual information are usually voted down.
The mind your own business and my child is just fine comments are getting old.
