Are you diagnosed with depression or chronic fatigue syndrome? Have you ever thought that maybe you could be one of the several thousands of people misdiagnosed? After being treated for depression for about 7 years I started having really weird stuff happen to me. I would see things that weren't there and do things I didn't remember doing. After visiting 4 different doctors that all told me I was suffering from postpartum depression I finally decided to make a stand and tell them NO. I didn't feel sad, or suicidal. I loved my life then they suggested that I had chronic fatigue snydrom..wrong again! As crazy as I knew I would sound I told the doctor about the things I've been seeing and doing with no recollection of doing them. These were simple everyday things like the dishes or putting out my cigarette before going to sleep. The doctors words to me were " To ease your mind I will have a neurologist look at you" When the test came back I was furious to find out they have been treating me for the past seven years for a condition I didn't have. What I have is NARCOLEPSY. It is estimated that thousands of people have it but are never diagnosed properly because patients are so unaware of the condition. The symptoms are so different from person to person and doctors are quick to diagnose (especially women with children) with depression or chronic fatigue snydrom. More people need to be aware of this condition and what they can do about it.
Symptoms of Narcolepsy are:
- Feeling fatigue (usually worse at certain times of the day)
- Hallucinations: falling asleep or waking up
- Sleep paralysis: Temporary paralysis when waking up or falling asleep
- Cataplexy: Weakness of the head, eyes, knees, usually brought on by strong emotion, laughter, fear or anger.
(You may exerpience one symptom or all of them.)
There is treatment so you can get your life back on track. If you have any questions please feel free to ask me. I am NOT a doctor I just want to help people become more aware of this condition because who knows you could be one of the several thousands misdiagnosed.
