I was just thinking about this and I wanted to share something with you ladies that support the troops and support Veterans of all wars regardless of your political views.
I am a U.S. Army Veteran. I served from March 1991-July 1995. I got out of the Army because I was pregnant with my son. I chalk this up to one of the biggest mistakes of my life ( long story, but I won't get into that) I didn't join the Army because of the GI Bill or for anyone to make a big fuss over me. I joined the Army because I wanted to be a part of something greater than myself. When I got out of the Army I was basically on my own (for lack of a better term) I was told that I could go to an Army hospital to have my baby. At the time I was living in West Tennessee and the closet Army post was Ft. Campbell, KY. That was about 2 hours away. I ended up having my son at a local hospital, you can imagine why, 2 hours is too far to go when you are in labor. Well to get to my point. People in this country think that Veterans are getting all kinds of benefits when they get out. Well this is NOT the truth. The troops who get out of the Army now who have served in OIF/OEF get 2 free years of medical services at any VA hospital in the country, and do they ever deserve it. I can go to a VA hospital for my care, but it isn't free. They would use my medical insurance and bill me. If you are a disabled Veteran you can get free care at a VA, if you are 100% service connected. But if you aren't you are on your own. The only 2 things I have gotten out of being a Veteran is 5 point preference for federal, state or city jobs, and I can use my VA loan certificate to get a house with no money down (which is a great deal). I think alot of people in this country are being misled about what Veterans who served this country actually get when they get out. Thanks for reading. Just wanted everyone to hear this from a Veteran.
Comments:
Thanks my husband is a veteran and I know that other then the VA Loan for a home there isnt much going for him out there.
I too am a veteran and it disheartens me to hear of how some people think that members of the armed services, including veterans, are just banking the big bucks. You're right...being a veteran now-adays means 5 point preference and VA loans. Nothing more. Guess serving our country is worth only those two small things lately! Thanks for bringing this to light!
