Last week we had to go back to Indiana. This time Todd's grandmother, Hazel, had passed away, just 9 days short of her 101st birthday. This may sound harsh, but it was a long time coming. Grandma was bedridden for well over a year, couldn't hear, see or speak very well and was suffering from bedsores that just would not go away. The Alzheimers didn't help, either. Towards the end, she was on Morphine and oxygen and hadn't eaten or drank for several days. It's a wonder she held on that long.
We were going to leave Omaha for home on Sunday, the 31st, but Ethan woke up early that morning with Strep (it's going around something bad here right now). So, we waited until Monday to head out. All was well until the car blew a radiator hose in the middle of nowhere, Iowa. Thank goodness a really nice guy stopped, gave us a ride to the nearest town where there was a NAPA store open (even though it was Labor Day) and had one hose left for our car. The guy even stayed with us until we were up and running again. Sure wish I was able to thank him before he left.
After all that trouble, the rest of the trip last week was OK. We were only there a couple of days, but it was nice to see family again. So many people showed up for the viewing and funeral. The boys were OK, until they rolled the casket out of the funeral home to go to the grave yard. Then Ethan became pretty upset, which got me crying to see his heart breaking like that. Then, at the graveside service, Zach started crying, too. I felt so bad for them, but they had to work this out on their own. All part of growing up.
The trip back to Omaha went without a hitch. We even stopped at Iowa 80, the world's largest truck stop. We didn't check out any of the museums or other extra stuff, just looked around inside the actual truck stop area. Pretty interesting!
Now we are back in Omaha and trying to get caught up on our bills again. Probably won't make it home for the holidays, but that's OK. We were there the last three years. People can come visit us for a change.
